Elon Musk says hiring for Tesla's Austin factory could hit 10,000 workers

Austin American-Statesman

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon that the Tesla manufacturing plant being built near Austin will hire more than 10,000 people through 2022.

Construction is proceeding rapidly on the company's newest manufacturing facility, which Musk first announced in July.

If Tesla does, in fact, hire 10,000 workers for the facility, that would be double the minimum number of hires the company has promised. In documents filed with local government entities, Tesla has promised that it would hire at least 5,000 people for the site.

"Over 10,000 people are needed for Giga Texas just through 2022! - 5 mins from airport -15 mins from downtown - Right on Colorado river," Musk's tweet said.

Musk provided no additional details, although it quoted a tweet by a Twitter user dubbed "Tesla Owners Austin" that linked to the Tesla jobs page and emphasized that the company accepts high school graduates without college degrees.

Tesla seems to already be ramping up its hiring in Austin. The company's job site currently lists more than 280 open positions for the region. Tesla executives have previously said the company is looking to tap into the region's talent pool, including the potential to forge partnerships with area high schools, colleges, workforce training agencies and trade groups.

Construction of the $1.1 billion manufacturing facility in southeast Travis County has been moving fast, with plans to start rolling out vehicles as early as this year. The company has said it plans to produce its Cybertruck, Semi, Model 3 compact sedan and Model Y vehicles at the site.

The tweet also comes just a day after Musk urged people to move to South Texas for his aerospace company SpaceX, which has operations in Boca Chica, in Cameron County, about 20 miles east of Brownsville. He called the area Starbase, a reference to an earlier social media post in which Musk said he wants to incorporate Boca Chica Village into a city called "Starbase."

"Please consider moving to Starbase or greater Brownsville/South Padre area in Texas & encourage friends to do so! SpaceX’s hiring needs for engineers, technicians, builders & essential support personnel of all kinds are growing rapidly," Musk tweeted Tuesday.

Musk himself is a recent Texas transplant, though it's not clear where exactly in the state he lives. He confirmed his move in December to the Wall Street Journal. At the time, he said his two biggest focuses are on GigaTexas, and the SpaceX starship development in South Texas.

Musk-led companies are seeing a rapid expansion in Texas and the Austin area.

The billionaire's tunneling and infrastructure company, the Boring Company, is currently renovating a space in Pflugerville and has multiple job postings for Austin.

While no formal plans or locations have been announced, SpaceX also appears to be considering an expansion to Austin. The aerospace company's job site recently listed job openings for engineering positions in Austin, and one posting said the company would be breaking ground on a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Austin.

Neuralink, Musk's neurotechnology company lists job postings for Austin, though it's not clear the company's exact plans. Over the summer, Musk also relocated his private foundation, the Musk Foundation, from California to Austin.

I'm thinking this means that Tesla will be adding more product lines in Austin than were originally thought to be there. Tesla is optimizing the assembly lines as much as possible and will have specific tasks at specific stations. Doubling the number of people in the factory will not change the number of people on each specific line. Though it could possibly mean that there would be two lines for the same product.

There are these things called busses. They don't have to park at the plant. Or even carpools.

I was thinking maybe Tesla might provide some kind of shuttle service.
