You can do both. If you want to wait and get it with your tax return filing at later time, it is totally fine. However, to get it at POS time, Tesla needs to be ready. Which I do not think they are - they probably have not uploaded all VINs to IRS yet.
In order to receive the Tax credit under 30D Tesla needs to upload any VINs to IRS (yes, each and every qualified VIN to IRS). VINs can be sold or unsold yet. The 30D credit can be then claimed at POS or via form 8936 *with your tax return of 2025*. My guess is that Tesla is not procedural ready...
