I can confirm they were backwards. Tesla Service Santa Monica fixed the issue Summer 2024 when I had the truck in for various items.

Does the battery chemistry have to be the same in extender? Can the extender have self contained cooling or double the parts so not feasible unless somehow it is a different type of self contained pack?

It is still listed in the specs on Tesla web page. It is still happening. It is a logistical and or web site change, temporary. regarding cooling: They probably designed a self contained pack. well engineered as always.
