IIRC the manual suggests 15 PSI for off road, we didn't want to spin it loose in Baja mode so kept it at about 20PSI

Not mine, I was down at 20PSI for sand dunes and had no trouble, even after getting back into normal mode on the road to drive a bit to fill up True! Same here, perhaps the OP needs to shift into Off road? or some other issue?

I don't really understand that first sentence? your range actually improved with low tire pressure? I just topped mine off from 47 PSI to bring it back up to 50PSI due to the colder weather?
