The only thing that comes up as a negative about this in my head is that, if you're only taking it out a few times a year, it's kind of a waste of the battery cells. Better to have them in an actual EV than spend 95% of their lives just sitting around doing nothing.

Then you leave it attached to your home power system. When you're away, your home's need for power drops, and hence, won't need batteries sitting around doing nothing...

Tesla isn't there yet, but this is future tech we're talking about.

Really what this world needs is a battery rental service that offers like 10 standardized battery sizes. The applications are endless from farm equipment that gets used once or twice a season like large tillers, to outdoor recreational toys like dirtbikes, boats etc. to big trailers. Its really a shame to have all this capacity and increasingly sparse battery resources sitting around.

And I know a lot of people are saying well it will all get tied to the grid and act like energy storage. So its not a total waste. Just wait until that becomes trendy. The power companies are already kicking and screaming about solar. And without solar this is how it will work. You will pay the power company $0.20 or more to charge the battery and they will give you back $0.02 when they take it back to the grid. The only way battery residential storage makes sense is when it is timed well with a solar or wind energy system.

If we converted a bunch of gas stations to battery rental centers and covered the entire lot in a solar canopy to keep it as green as possible and standardized battery swaps it would be brilliant. Yes, the vehicles would be slightly less efficient from added structure to accommodate the battery housing but the speed and availability of the batteries should easily offset that. All to say, power assisted trailers are brilliant to help with range and efficiency of the main vehicle overall. And I am really hopeful that this standardized swappable battery becomes a thing.

The idea of rental batteries is cool, but... Most of them are just too big and too special purpose for it to ever really take off.

There's some scooter battery rentals in the big Asian cities - that seems reasonable, as scooters use alot less power, and hence the batteries can be lifted by a smallish human.

But for trailers or other dynamic loads, the amount of weight of the batteries only means the trailer needs to be bigger and bulkier, so making them really removable would be less optimal than putting them under stress and reducing the structure needed to hold them.

Just build an Ev with a battery big enough to tow already.

This ”I’m an EVTrlr net-zero” angle is a moment in time not a real vehicle”. Call it what it is. Airstream is EOL when no cars OR pickups can tour the country dragging their shiny bedrooms.

There awaits a ton of hurt connecting a “pusher” drive unit up to a center pull tow hitch then expect it to work in reverse and in tandem with the towing power unit, pushing forward.

Hauling all the weight of a huge battery when you only need it 5-10 times a year seems like a bad trade off. I would love to see something like a power wall that was in your trailer. You could hook it up to your solar if you have it or use it as a house back up. It could be permanently mounted in the trailer or removable (probably pretty heavy but it could have wheels) Then when you needed it you slide it into the bed of the truck or into a compartment on your trailer and off you go.
It would need to provide about 250-500 miles of towing and could be supercharged form a second station while still mounted and while you charge the CT.

Yup, future tech.

for example instead of having

3 powerwalls attached directly to the house you would have 1 powerwall directly attached to the house (so always available), RV with 2 powerwalls that power RV when away or the RV powerwalls power the house/grid when at home.

Also when away the RV powerwalls can help charge Cybertruck or give a little electrical juice to starving stranded EVs.
