Hi all, I just received my plates and registration from DMV, and the CT was listed as commercial. Did a bit of Gork and it suggests applying for RV conversion to lower the tax bill before next renewal. Did anyone do it successfully without full camper shell or “cooktop” installation? Over 5+ years of ownership, the registration costs will add up! Thanks

I asked MS Copilot and this was their response:

Yes, it is possible to reclassify your 2024 Tesla Cybertruck from a commercial vehicle to an RV (Recreational Vehicle) conversion in California, but there are specific requirements and considerations to keep in mind.

✅ What You Need to Know:
1. Why Reclassify?
  • Commercial vehicles in California often incur higher registration fees and taxes.
  • Reclassifying as an RV (also known as a "house car") can significantly reduce your Vehicle License Fee (VLF) and weight fees, especially over multiple years of ownership
    1
    .
2. What Qualifies as an RV Conversion?
According to the California DMV, to qualify as an RV or "house car," the vehicle must be:

  • Designed or permanently altered for human habitation.
  • Equipped with at least fourof the following:
    • Cooking facilities
    • Refrigeration or icebox
    • Self-contained toilet
    • Heating or air conditioning
    • Potable water supply system (including a sink)
    • Separate 110/125-volt electrical power supply
    • Sleeping facilities
      2
3. Cybertruck-Specific Considerations
  • Some Cybertruck owners have discussed converting their trucks with camper shells or modular camping kits to meet these requirements
    1
    .
  • However, just having a camper shell or mattress may not be enough. The DMV may require permanent or semi-permanent installations (e.g., bolted-in cooktops, plumbing, etc.).
4. Inspection & Documentation
  • You’ll likely need to schedule an inspection at a DMV field office or CHP station.
  • Bring photos, receipts, and a completed Statement of Construction (REG 5036) form.
  • The DMV may also require a weight certificate and proof of insurance for the new classification.
⚠ Important Caveats:
  • If your Cybertruck is still under Tesla’s warranty, modifying it for RV use might affect coverage.
  • If you use the vehicle for business or commercial purposes, reclassification may not be allowed.
DMV staff may interpret the rules differently depending on the office, so it’s wise to call ahead or consult a vehicle registration service.
