I sent a version of this via e-mail to Governor Abbott, and my state Senator and Representative today:
---
Dear <Gov/Senator/Rep>,
I feel blessed to be an American, living in Texas, and I’m grateful to you for defending our freedoms as Texans.
I am writing to you about our rights of choice as Texan consumers. I’m thrilled that Tesla is building a vehicle factory in Austin, and I have reserved a truck that will begin production later this year. However, under current Texas law, I will not be able to buy that truck in Texas. Tesla will have to export it out of state, and then reimport it as an “out of state vehicle”.
I hope you agree with me that it’s absurd I’ll have to buy a truck produced 10 miles from my house as an “out of state” exported vehicle. I don’t want to buy through a dealership, and it’s un-Texan to force me to do so. It would be unethical for Texas to collect sales tax on this truck after forcing Tesla to export it to another state.
Please work with <message based on position> and urge your colleagues to sign onto legislation to right this wrong, before cars and trucks start rolling off the assembly line this fall.
Thank you for all that you do!
Sincerely,
