Cybertruck Windshield Washer Fluid

If you have ppf with ceramic top-coat, you should be OK with standard methanol-based washer fluid. If you have the original uncoated stainless, you need to be careful since some of those have mid to high pH 10. It is very hard to find ethanol-based washer fluid in the U.S.

To create a pH-neutral, denatured ethanol-based windshield washer fluid, you'll need to focus on using distilled water and a pH-neutral detergent (like a mild dish soap or specialized car wash soap) to avoid altering the pH balance.

Ingredients:

Distilled Water:

This is essential for preventing mineral buildup and potential damage to your washer system.

Denatured Ethanol:

This is the alcohol base that will help prevent freezing and improve cleaning.

Denatured ethanol is often used for antifreeze applications due to its effectiveness and availability.

It is important to note that denatured ethanol is not pure ethanol and may contain additives to make it unsuitable for consumption.

pH-Neutral Detergent:

A car wash soap designed for cleaning car exteriors is recommended.

Add a small amount of your chosen pH-neutral detergent. A few drops or a small squirt of car wash soap is usually sufficient

Example:

  • To make a 40% ethanol solution, you would mix 400 ml of denatured ethanol with 600 ml of water. This would provide freeze protection down to -20°F.
Additional considerations:

  • The specific concentration of ethanol needed will depend on the lowest temperature you anticipate.
If you need protection at significantly lower temperatures, you may need to increase the ethanol concentration.

Consider the intended use of the solution.

Different applications may have specific requirements for the ethanol concentration, such as in windshield washer fluid or other specialized solutions.

A 5% solution (about 8 liquid oz. per gallon of water) will protect against a hard freeze down to about 10º F. A 10% solution (about 13 liquid oz. alcohol per gallon of water) will protect against a hard freeze down to about 0º F.

Methanol doesn't affect pH that I know of.

I complement your product - as neutral solutions are less likely to leave streaks - but the chemistry here is off and that'll hurt your idea.

(And ethanol in vapor form does less immediate damage to humans than methanol, so that's an advantage, too.)

Why not just add ethanol to Windex sine that is what everyone says to use on your truck? or am I way off base?

I wouldn't think that a pH of 10 would be a bad thing for stainless steel... The owners manual says "avoid exposure o soaps and chemicals above pH13"... 10 should be just fine...

pH neutral is 7.4, Ammonia (used in most window cleaners) is 11 at full strength... Diluting ANY window cleaner with either more water or denatured ethanol (which is about 8) will get a HIGH pH level lower, but so will many other things (like Alum, Acetic acid, etc.) but you need to be very careful with making your 'adjustments'...

Easier is just to test the pH of your window cleaner... If it's 7-10 then you should be just fine... If it's 11, I would add something to 'adjust' it and alcohol can be good, but remember, it evaporates faster than the water will so don't make big batches.
