For my own thought process:

I would rather drive a cybertruck then a dodge. meaning: I would drive a CT before I drive a dodge
I would rather drive a cybertruck than a dodge. meaning: I would rather drive a CT instead of a dodge.

I do see how it would be confusing (if i even used it correctly) but I can also see the difference based solely on context.
