I've been scouring the NHTSA VIN database api for info on the new Livewire S2 Del Mar, trying to figure out the VIN prefixes/etc for that bike and hopefully to glean when release is imminent. All this talk on the order update page got me thinking I should also do that for the Cybertruck.
So, in my brief research, what I've discovered is that Tesla has a couple VIN prefixes separate from all their passenger car vins. I do not think they have a prefix devoted specifically to the CT as of yet, but they might go that route.
Tesla had applied to create a WMI (VIN Prefix) for a vehicle type "Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV)" on Nov 1 2021 with that vehicle being available to the public on the same date. This VIN prefix is "7SA". Is this the Model Y VIN format? Otherwise, not sure what this "MPV" is that is supposedly available to the public since Nov 2021?
The other VIN prefix potentially related is "7G2" which is listed as the vehicle type "Truck". This prefix was added to the NHTSA database on Oct 17, 2022 and vehicle available to the public on the same date. I am assuming this 7G2 Vin number is the Tesla Semi.
What is up in the air is, will Tesla place the CT under the 7SA Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle VIN prefix (This is what I would assume they would do if they lump the CT in with whatever this currently available "MPV" is), the 7G2 Truck VIN Prefix along with the Semi (I doubt this, as that would mingle passenger trucks with commercial trucks in the VIN database), or will they create a whole new VIN Prefix specifically for passenger "Truck"?
I will be scanning this regularly as we get near to see if anything updates. But it appears that Tesla applies for VIN prefixes on the same date as the launch of the vehicle for sale. So this avenue of information would not provide any advanced knowledge.
