I'll take a guess it was actually a strict coding thing, following the standards by the book.Correct. And it’s a poor coding thing as was discovered by the first of two organizations out of hundreds that it caused a problem with.

Lots of email systems allow invalid characters, of which, they may work to 80% of the systems, but not 100%.
I do email for a living.
