Unless you decline it, drive off the lot, and are then immediately hit. Then who is the sucker?
I'm kidding of course, your point is well taken but the decision to insure anything is considerably more complex than your post implies.

It would be worth it to me if I didn’t just buy a windshield protection agreement. I had two windshield replacements in 8 months due to cracks. One was my fault. The other is a mystery like maybe a golf ball or a rock. Didn’t happen while driving and nothing on Sentry. Both cost me $1000 each (deductible) and cost State Farm $1300 each because they paid for windshield and tint. They will get it back in increased premiums I’m sure. I did find a company that will insure the windshield for $597 for 5 years so I signed up. It sounded scammy but I checked it out and it’s legit. Transparency is the name. We will see if I ever need to make a claim.

So does anyone here know how this plan would handle tint and lightbar? I feel like explaining to Tesla why the bar needs to be replaced when the windshield is replaced would be much easier than explaining that to another insurance company.
My hunch is State Farm will tell me I’m SOL with respect to my $2400 factory lightbar if and when that happens. Tint is an easier argument.

I noticed I had a couple of chips on my windshield after just 2 or 3 months of having my CT. I was very disappointed because I thought these windows are supposed to be almost bulletproof.

Insurance is always for suckers. That’s literally its business model.
Correct. I carry $10k or higher deductibles on everything, houses, cars, businesses, boats. It’s not smart to bet against teams of actuaries. I never, ever make insurance claims.

Not worth it. I have a rider with Travelers for 50 dollar deductible on glass. I have 1500 deductible otherwise, and comprehensive coverage is only 333 per year of 1500 per year for full coverage with expanded liability and Um/uim.

Betting against the house
That would be silly. Playing the odds. If a rock is going to hit a windshield, my wife will find it. She gets a new windshield on her car every year without fail. Our insurance covers her vehicle but not the CT. As far as the tire coverage, I know someone that just had to cough up almost $900 to get his Pirelli Scorpion replaced from driving over a larger sized rock.

Has anyone with a Cybertruck gotten a chip yet, I live in Colorado where I would get 4-5 chips a year in my model S. I haven’t got one yet. I’m assuming the stronger glass, and the angle of the windshield makes it much harder to get a broken window.

If I add up every tire, windshield and accident repair it would come to tens of thousands of dollars that I have paid out of pocket. Several accident repairs over $10k each. I am still WAY ahead having always paid out of pocket and never making a claim. I save over $20k per year taking the high deductible approach on 12 vehicles, three homes, several Utes, six licensed motorcycles, several boats and a couple jet skis.

Even if I spent $3k per year on a new CT windshield and $1k per year on tire repairs, I am still WAY ahead of the house. They make money betting against you. If what you’re saying is that your household has bad drivers and excessive claims, the strategy of betting against the house may work for a year or two. Eventually your claim history catches up and you are paying for it in rates.

I pay $475/six months for CT insurance with a $10k deductible. I could buy a new windshield every six months and still be ahead of the quotes presented here for CT coverage.

It is impossible to beat the house long term. Save a few (speculative) bucks now, maybe sleep slightly better, but pay it back in much higher rates now or later, especially with the claim history you outline.

I know that I am way ahead effectively self-insuring the small stuff and only covering disaster events. Same for stupid maintenance plans, appliance and expensive to coverage. You cannot win. Yes, I teach a course on this.

$35 per month. Thoughts?
Hello SM, can’t you with your normal auto insurance a $100 deductible get you a brand new windshield?

If you live in a state where you cannot get full glass coverage under comprehensive. It might be a good deal if you're doing a lot of road tripping.

But if you're driving local I would just put money aside to replace the windshield when it eventually breaks.

Comprehensive coverage on the Cybertruck is rather steep with zero deductibles. See my attached screenshot of my policy coverages.

I was paying $138 a month through State Farm but they just increased their rates for all of their automotive policies.

I'm now paying $175 a month (screenshot works out to $186 a month. This is before I called them and complained about the increase and they lowered it $15 a month down to $175) with the same coverages.

This is with a completely clean commercial driver's license in Northern missouri.

Mine will reduced 5% but still $200 / month with State Farm. Not sure if it’ll get any better soon.
