I used to live in Fairfax County and I couldn't wait to get away from those ridiculous yearly taxes on cars I already bought. They overvalued every single vehicle we ever owned and always denied the appeals. That alone more than made up for the taxation difference from us moving to Maryland. Not to mention how much I was paying in property taxes for my house in FFX... my current house is same size and on a much larger plot, but taxes are less than 1/3rd what they were in FFX.

I'm curious to hear from other Cybertruck owners around Virginia how much your new trucks are being "assessed" at for the purposes of Virginia's annual personal property tax. I am in Loudoun County and ended up with a "Taxable Value" of $91,787. This will lead to a tax bill of $3,576.76 for 2024 (it will be reduced/prorated since I didn't get the car until May). They arrived at this taxable value by charging 90% of the new vehicle purchase price. The issue I have with this is that means I end up paying taxes on portions of the Foundation package which aren't even part of a car (Mobile connector), and Full Self Driving does not actually exist on the truck. My understanding of the Virginia Code is the Taxable Value of a new vehicle is supposed to be based on the MSRP and not include upgrades (like wheel packages which could easily be purchased after the initial sale to avoid having the new car price elevated). The MRSP is supposed to be listed in the NADA New Car Price Guide (maybe an organization that has an anti-Tesla bias). I also wonder how other new non-Tesla vehicles and handled in terms of using a percent of their purchase price verses a percent of their MSRP price. I'm all for paying my fair share but paying extra tax on a non-existent but expensive feature (like FSD) seems wrong. There is an appeal process and having additional data points from around the state would be helpful if there are inconsistent practices out there.
That alone is one of the reasons why I refused to live in Virginia. High property taxes for your home, income, and every conveyance that is considered property such as every vehicle whether a car, truck, SUV, ATV, RV, Jet Ski, Dirt Bike, etc.

That’s one of the reasons why i chose to reside in Maryland instead.

I agree, the PP tax is annoying. That said, not sure Maryland is actually better from a taxation standpoint. For example, on this website:
https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-highest-lowest-tax-burden/20494

Maryland has the 9th highest “tax burden” where Virginia is 27th.

TAXATION IS THEFT... that is insane how much you have to pay just to own a vehicle.

Oh the old Virginia fuxk me in the a$$ tax. I have a home in VA and a home in FL. I purchased my model S p85+ in early 2014 in Virginia. My estimated tax since purchase including the original sales tax is now at about $25k (10 years later). Think about that for a moment……

my truck is registered in Florida at my house there.. other than sales tax there will be nothing….

this is why we live in a world where our children will not be able to afford to buy a house…

I think we went from taxation without representation to “heavy taxation with marginal representation”…
WTF that's obnoxious $25K?!?!

I guess it also depends on the county. I was paying quite a bit more in taxes when I lived in DC compared to MD.
End all be all Uncle Sam, city, county and state will always attempt to get theirs some way somehow and it somewhat balances out in the end with few exceptions such as being a veteran with a disability rating of 100% P&T I suppose. But even then, in some states it’s just discounted property tax.

Same here in Missouri. If you own a boat you pay property tax individually on the boat, motor, and trailer. Plan on several grand for a cybertruck, several thousand plus for your house.

So, I just got my VA. Property (car) tax bill. OUCH!!

The appraisal on the CyberBeast according to the Comm. of Revenue for Culpeper was $134,850. Yes, much more than I paid!

Anybody, tried to appeal these appraisals with any luck??

Ouch! I would think your truck could not be worth MORE than when you bought it... I mean, unless it's a collectible, that is.

They don't think the JD Power value could be wrong?

How can the vehicle be appraised for more than one could buy it NEW from a TESLA showroom? This all happened about the time a few vehicles were auctioned off to some European and Middle Eastern multi-millionaires. Too small a sample group and the numbers are defiantly skewed. I have some calls into Richmond, but the bureaucrats are throwing up their arms and blaming the book. No responsibility or common sense. Besides, who GAS about "rich" people buying TESLAS (tic).

Does anyone have a sales receipt at the end of DEC '24 or Jan '25 they could share??
