I just had my first long trip with my Cybertruck and the range was atrocious. Honestly it’s killed all momentum for me. I spent a lot of money on a truck that will only be used around town.

I understand that my driving conditions were probably the worst but I drove it like I would any other truck. It was 97 degrees out, 4 full grown adults, cybertent in bed and averaged 86mph. Speed limit is 80 on this part of interstate.

This is my first EV and I went into it knowing the driving conditions severely affect range but boy was I not ready for this. I left town with 300+ miles and I was only going 143 miles away. I went in assuming I would have enough mileage to get there and back.

With that in mind I intended to hit up a supercharger just for the peace of mind. This put full mileage at 183 from supercharger to supercharger. I rolled into the supercharger with 16%.
Ya sorry. Evs going 86 mph don’t work great. My Y and 3 don’t even go near the range at that consistent speed

This weekend was my first experience with a long range CT AWD run. I went Durango to Moab (167 miles door to door). The Durango to Moab was awesome. Started at 100 % and ended at 53%. Wooo Hooo! That can make a winter trip work! But then I came home today. Topped up to 100% and a CT convention occurred at the Moab SC with 3 CTs and one pulling a 8k trailer with Jeep inside from Golden CO (that’s another post).

Charged it to 100% and the CT said I will get home with 34%. Ouch. It ended up 32% (great estimate) because I like to pass lots of tourists doing 5-10 under and Semis. Why? Well my original trip I went from 7k feet to 4k feet. But I had to do the reverse direction to go back. My first lesson in regenerative charging! Ok… why the ouch… 32% is great!!! Yeah it is… until winter when my miles lose 30%. That cuts it mighty close to 0%. Might I add there are no super chargers between Durango and Moab and no CCS adapters at this point for the CT. ?

Yes… range anxiety just hit.

That said, I have appreciation for the CT dude pulling an 8K trailer with a Jeep. He said he pulled into Grand Junction with -2% to the SC there. I would have been clawing my eyeballs out on that ?. Kudos to him and his family.

And at 16% remaining you had 35 miles at your documented consumption before you had to start worrying about randomly stopping.
Yeah but that only comes out to 230 miles versus the 300+ I left town with.

Yeah I get that I’ll be able to get a lot more out of the range if I drive perfectly. It’s just when road tripping we tend to always drive pretty fast. I’m used to trucks with massive gas tanks and focusing on how I drive has never really been a thing.

It’ll be a behavior change for sure but honestly we’ll probably just take the Suburau Ascent instead as the range is much better. Maybe FSD will change my mind after it’s been enabled.

I do thoroughly enjoy driving the truck and I can’t say that about my ICE vehicles.

Criminal was for emphasis and not legalese…
To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Towing capacity and range shortage is more important with FSD where theoretically I could drive further on a charge with less stops using FSD.
The other bit is charging with a trailer at the locations I have available requires dropping the trailer, charging and then reconnecting Taj-Ma-Haul.

I plan on frequently driving between AZ, MT and MI so all of this adds up-to me.
Understood. Although I have the AwD, I have a Beast reservation also, but have not received an invite to order. And there are issues. For example I have a need to haul 14,000 lb, not 11,000. 14k isn't available now, so that fraction of use of the Beast is gone.

Not sure what I'll do, but not going to worry about it too much - having too much fun driving the AWD.

Keeping my F150 is an option - of course it won't haul 14k either. Getting a diesel F250/F350 isn't an option, I simply don't need to haul often enough to want to have a $100k rig like that sitting around. Just having other people do trailering and paying them is an option. I've seen cases they could do it far cheaper and more reliably than I could.

Actually, EVs going 90+ work really great, make it seem like they are doing it effortlessly, but they are not, so they just don't go nearly as far on a charge. ?

Well, if no one converted their reservations, you'd get it pretty quickly.

But since they have to go through the list anyway, and this doesn't change when the trucks are delivered, maybe you should think about how time actually works. When you convert your reservations to an order a day or week earlier doesn't mean you get your truck a day or week earlier.

-Crissa
you have inadvertently confirmed that you were wrong when you suggested that canceling reservations could not result in others getting their CyberTruck sooner….case closed.

This is true. I got pulled over going 83 in a 55… felt like I was going 65.. so effortless. ??‍♂

Driving any Tesla over 80 mph will always yield a major decline on range. The S will likely perform best, but the CT worst. Even the road noise from 80 to 85 mph is noticeable enough to me that I don’t want to drive there.

You should try the same trip with 4 dudes at 75 mph and you’d likely be surprised by the improved outcome.

Technically, looking at your loose math of 183 miles from SC to SC and 16% remaining from some 300+ mile charge, you still had 48 miles to go, totaling 231 miles from beginning if it was exactly 300 miles range to start. The 85 mph plus load factor and AC kicked butt. But overall, the CT did great considering those factors. Hopefully planning ahead and knowing what to expect will help you enjoy the experience and you can regain momentum and joy of ownership.

No way winter will cost you 30%! Relax, maybe 10% at worst. CT killed it for your trip, I know the route well. Going south out of Moab is brutal on range and you were within 2%?! I’m planning Albuquerque to Moab next week and back. Based on your numbers, I’m stoked!

There is a supercharger south of Monticello by 20 miles or so. That would technically be your plan B if the winter drive plus load caused for concern back to Durango. You’d just have a little double backing to Moticello with that route, but there is support there, FYI.

Yeah… that charger is in Blanding… it will add an about an hour and 30 minutes on the trip.

There is a great CCS high speed DC in Monticello. That CCS adapter from Tesla or AtoZ can’t come soon enough. That one would do it for me.

Safe travels and enjoy the heat! 100 in Moab today!

Until Tesla delivers my CT with the 500-mile range I reserved for, I feel completely swindled.

I understand the reason for shorting the range to produce more trucks to shore up the balance sheet, but I don’t accept it.

I’ll be towing 80% of the time and losing 190 miles or 38% of the range I reserved for is criminal.

So yeah, I have range anxiety before taking delivery…
Were you planning on getting the tri-motor variant?

I reserved the tri-motor! I felt three motors would be beneficial towing up mountains and through iffy road conditions in the National Forests.

So yes, the tri-motor did have prototype indications of 500 miles. But how many manufacturer prototypes have ever even made it to market? And made it with their specifications intact?

BUT, it's over, it's the past.
