I'm almost to the point of quitting Reddit. The radicalism has been escalating over the past few years and invading every possible sub. The only reason I'm here is because /r/Cybertruck was invaded by haters after the delivery event when it was previously a place of excited fanatics. I commented on /r/electricvehicles that it'll be nice if the obsessive hatred dies down once I get my CT. That comment was downvoted to hell while obsessive haters took that as an opportunity to go off on their rants, which were all upvoted. There is 0 self awareness lol.
Its actually quite interesting. I sometimes read /r/cyberstuck for entertainment value. Some of the posts are quite funny. The ones that make me laugh are the dumpster pics of which you had to double take and say ā€œwow … I have to admit, it looks like a CT ?ā€. Those posts are all good fun and I must admit enjoying some of them. I think that was the originator’s intent for that subreddit.

That said, there is some serious hate over there. I didn’t know that if you click on someones’s handle, you can see all of thier Reddit content. So for fun, for what it’s worth, I decided to click on some of the names and see what they post all over getting a feel for who these people are and if they are a solid swathe of the population, meaning there is general hate for the CT, or if these people represent small groups of like-minded individuals. Here is what I found:

A majority are Gen-Z/Millenials. A lot also seem to be extreme anti-Musk and hang out in /r/EnoughMuskSpam and /r/WhitePeoplesTwitter and other similar subreddits. Many are vehement anti-Trump/Musk and post in anti-conservative subreddits. I am guessing folks who hate Trump and see Musk’s support extends to anyone who supports Tesla is an instant villain. Many also seem to hang out in gaming subreddits, and seem quite young (teens and 20s).

Several make comments about how CT owners say ā€œthey are just jealousā€. Interestingly I found many of those folks own older used vehicles and some comment that if they could afford a CT, they would never buy one - I’m thinking there are some sour grapes here. I don’t notice Porche/Mercedes/etc folks posting over there, so there aren’t many luxury vehicle owners commenting, although if there are, I assume they are in a tiny minority. Some are in subreddits complaining about their jobs, of which many are servers in places like the Olive Garden or baristas. I definitely think there is some denial with the jealousy comments they make. There was one knucklehead who posts a lot about how our CTs break down all the time and talks a lot about how our vehicles are junk/trash as well as how dumb we are to buy something so unreliable. This gentleman, however owns a 9 or 10 yo VW Golf Sportwagon. He posts in several Reddit VW forums talking about how to repair many issues that he experiences with his car. I think this guy posts more on VW issues than we have had in total in all of our forums. I found it amusing watching some of these guys talk trash about our ā€œWankPanzerā€ (that’s what they call CTs) being unreliable, where their own vehicles seem to have a ton more problems than us. The hypocracy was hilarious. I will note, I think the term WankPanzer is quite hilarious and have caught myself referring to my CT as the WankPanzer.

In summary, the majority haters are representative of a small group of like-minded folks. They definitely do not represent a random sampling of our population. They do seem to have an agenda and a bone to pick. In other words, don’t let them get to you. It’s a lot funner to see where some of these knuckleheads post and get a feel for who some of these people actually are. You will think ā€œNothing to see here, move alongā€ and ā€œthe shoe fits on that personā€. After a while, you will guess what subreddits some of these folks post to, and you will laugh… thinking I KNEW IT!ā€ ?

Had a guy pull up next to me cackling like a Disney character today - I just said ā€œbro your fender is literally rusted through, worry about your POSā€

Social media often amplifies negative sentiments more than positive ones because controversial or outrage-inducing content tends to get more engagement and spread faster. This can lead to a skewed perception of a product if one's primary source of information is from platforms where sensationalism and exaggeration are common (like Reddit, but really most social media)

Anecdotes, especially negative ones, can have a disproportionate impact on perceptions. A few isolated incidents of the Cybertruck malfunctioning can be blown out of proportion and become representative of the product as a whole in the eyes of critics.

And last, people tend to follow and interact with others who share their views, creating echo chambers that reinforce their pre-existing beliefs. If there's a narrative that the Cybertruck is unreliable / shitty that narrative will be perpetuated and amplified within certain groups.

Interesting world we live in.

Have to just understand this and ignore the haters. Eventually the sensationalism will die down.

Seems like ever since I got my Cybertruck, a lot of my acquaintances suddenly have become experts about the Cybertruck. One specific friend keeps showing me threads from a subreddit called Cyberstuck and at first I asked why was he so interested in these posts when he doesn't own a Cybertruck. Then he continues to show me different posts from that thread. Now I just put a laughing emote at everything he shares. At first I didn't care but now its starting to get annoying. It's my first time owning an EV and this attention is crazy. Anyone have a similar experience like this?
Yep! I have lost two what i thought were friends so far. I have known both for over 25 years. They are now just rude and sarcastic. I dont talk to them anymore. They still text me and i will respond as long as they act like adults. The haters are just pathetic.

Pretty much, yeah. Some subset of people always have been. It’s just easier to not realize you are one because it’s so easy now to surround yourself with other people the same, making your own behavior seem normal.

(Taking time out of your day and making a hobby out of making fun of someone else’s shit is not normal behavior)

Great post!

I've had a few people who have told me, if you vote for X or if you buy this car, we are no longer friends.

Firstly, that isn't how friends work. Second, if me being your "friend" (intentional quote) is conditional on me doing something you want, that means you are so arrogant as a person that you genuinely believe it is a privilege for me to be associated with you. Like a lot of folks have said already, I am polite to those people as long as they act like adults. Otherwise I excuse myself from whatever social interaction is going on.

Haters will always hate. Kill them with kindness/politeness.

Before social media existed (90s)I had a Mustang 5.0 convertible. I got some haters then too. Especially when I had a lady in the car with me. It was usually from people with crappy cars though. Yelling, flipping birds, etc.

Well said! I guess some don’t even know what acting like an adult means nowadays. Because of unhealthy upbringing, some adults are just emotionally unregulated kids trapped in the Adult body! There could be no other reason to flip or curse a total stranger! ?ā€ā™‚

Usually that sort of stuff is in jest, but...

There are some lines that make sense. When it comes down to consent, and safety for instance, or the big one: bigotry... that's not transactional, it's self-preservation. Don't hang out with people who step over your boundaries. What they do on their own time is their own thing, but if they make you feel unsafe, well... gotta do what you gotta do to feel safe.

We all have our own boundaries, and that's good.
