I spoke to a Tesla rep today and confirmed that this rumor is true. I have an order on hold, not to game the system, but to wait for a cash deposit coming from someone who has agreed to buy a collector car from me that I had intended to sell to pay for my Foundation Series Cyberbeast. My order originally stated “October or later this year’, and that is the timeline I was working with. My order hold is due to expire at the end of the year, but I only need it to last for another week or two from today. It’s wrong for Tesla to tell you that your hold is good until a certain date and then change the date and say “buy now or else”.

That being said, I also asked the rep if I paid the amount in full through the Tesla app if I receive a VIN, but wouldn’t be able to pick up the vehicle in the 3 day deadline that we are now given at some delivery centers. He told me that it makes no difference. I’d still lose the $1000 deposit and my place in line. He couldn’t even make it clear that I’d get my $120K payment back, which was shocking.
Thanks for the feedback, tesla used to pride itself on a low stress relaxed buying experience, clearly they are hurting right now because its all hardball tactics now...

Not a good look

My situation was not dissimilar. I wanted to use funds I was expecting to come in from a specific source for this purchase. My expected delivery was supposed to be 10/24-12/24. Damned thing showed up in July!

As has been stated above by many, it was incumbent upon me to consider this possibility when I committed to buy and sent $1k to them.

I did. With the full knowledge that things might not go the way I wanted. They did not, so I had to pivot. If I wasn’t in a position to pivot, it would be dumb to have encumbered myself in this way.

If I ended up not wanting or being able to perform, I’d just have to accept that I sacrificed $1k knowing the potential consequences. ??‍♂

I have mine on hold until the non-FS offering is available. I asked nicely, early on, and they allowed it just fine.

My main reason behind passing on the FS series is that Tesla absolutely bulldozed the waiting list and kept us mere peasants months in the dark waiting to hear when they were done passing out keys to the celebrities and powerful/elite. I went through the trouble of ensuring I was literally a minute one reservation holder, and they didn't offer me a VIN until, what, 8 months later?

Hopefully they stick to what they said earlier about allowing me to keep my place in line and roll that $1,000 into it. But at the end of the day, if I have to forfeit it, it's really only my fault. I agreed to take that risk in the first place out of FOMO.

Impressive. Some personal responsibility. Very rare these days.

My case is not about personal responsibility. I want the Foundation Series, and that is what I intend to buy long before my delivery hold date (set by Tesla) expires. If my hold expires before I take delivery and there are no more Foundation Series trucks left, then I accept the $1000 deposit as non-refundable. However, if Tesla prematurely removes a hold and cancels an order without refund while Foundation Series vehicles are still in production and available, then that's where I have a problem with it.

This is EXACTLY the same issue I am facing. I want a Foundation Series as I intend to keep this truck long-term. I just need my hold to be honored for 6 more weeks as the confirmed for me in an official email. It’s not right for them to retroactively void this based on a new policy. I was already granted the hold prior to the change in policy.

Btw, I called to have this escalated to corporate. I’ll let you know if they call back. I haven’t found a working email for Tesla, but let me know if you have one. I’ll email them too.

I don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news, your hold will be taken off in the next 1-2 weeks. The same thing happened to me.

Have you received any notification from Tesla that your hold was prematurely withdrawn? You can call 1 (888) 518-3752. Press 1 for vehicles, then opt for the delivery info, but wait for a rep. You will need the zip code for your delivery location so you're connected to the right delivery center.

Zero notification. Suddenly I received a VIN today, which prompted me to call them. And on the phone call the rep just casually tells me “oh yeah the policy changed.”

So had your hold expired on its own, or did Tesla withdraw the hold before its expiration date?

It shouldn’t have expired on its own. My hold was set to expire November 7, 2024. The exact date is noted in an automatic email that was sent to me about my order from Tesla. Official email.

Probably what they did was change my hold to an earlier date in September without notifying me and then issued me a VIN today.

By the way, the VIN they gave me the was in the 25k range. Interestingly, all of the Cybertrucks in that location were 31-32k when I had visited the service center 2 weeks ago (for a different purpose). It makes me think that I received the VIN so quickly because this was a reject vehicle. We should be way past 25k at this point. Obviously this is just an assumption, I have no proof.

That's very strange and alarming. If you have the original email, you should be able to appeal or contest the date change without your approval. How did you originally request your hold? Was it over the phone while speaking to an actual rep, or was it through the Tesla app somewhere?
