So, I got to thinking a couple of weeks ago that if auto park is just using the cameras to see lines on the ground, then, I should be able to create ā€œparking stallsā€ in my garage and have my cars auto park.

Surely, I can’t be the only one to have had the idea. It took a while to reorganize/clean the garage out a bit and get some white gaffer’s tape in before I could rough out a test stall and give it a go. Welp, the tape showed up today.

Even with only one stall roughed out, both my S and the CB recognized two available spaces and both parked in both spots flawlessly. With or without the other spot being occupied.

Game changer!

My wife literally shed a tear knowing that she’s never going to have to struggle backing into the garage to be on her side ever again. Last year she ran into my vet with her model Y in the driveway. She said I’m a genius and I’m not gonna try to convince her that she’s wrong. ?

My cars will be perfectly parked with the exact right amount of space between them and the side walls of our garage from now on!

Why the hell would I buy cars that can’t do this?

Well Done @dalton108 !!!
And nice pics and video.

We have one car garage and my wife gets it for her ModelY. But we have a lot of space outside in driveway and a second Tesla charger for my CT. I am assuming it is white tape on the floor. If so, any change you can share amazon link/tape info.

Thanks!

Yeah, this is just gaffer tape and it’s not gonna be my final marking. I used it because it’s low residue and won’t rip up my painted garage surface when I take it up for the real deal. Happy all of the tapes that I have ordered and will report out when I have the final markings done.

Gaffer tape for testing

One of these two is going to be the final tape that I use, I think. Probably the first one:

=======================

Also, very importantly, it just occurred to me that my title is wrong. My first attempt was with only one strip of tape and the car didn’t recognize that at all! 2 inches is not wide enough.

I had to do two strips all the way around which is why I could only do one stall. I didn’t have enough tape. The tape that I think I’m going to use comes in 3 inch or 4 inch wide varieties and I think I’m going to go with the 3 inch version.

It gets pretty pricey at that size but I only wanna do this once.

Surely you could just paint lines for a lot less money but I have my reasons for wanting to do it this way.

When I first got the idea, I did a search and somewhere Google found specifications directly from Tesla as to what the minimum requirements are for the car to auto park. I didn’t exactly follow those specifications, but I’ll see if I can locate them.

That is a really great idea. Unfortunately I am not sure it would work for me because I need to park within 3 inches of the wall to be able to close the garage door. I do not think autopark will let itself get that close.

I was unable to find the information that I thought I saw before and I’m sure it had greater detail about the specifications required for the lines but here’s this link anyways if I find the other I will certainly post it:

https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/... space must have, such as cobblestone or brick.

And of course, now that I’m actually searching for it, I see that I’m far from the first person to come up with the idea (there’s crap all over Reddit and elsewhere), but at least I did come with it independently.

I see now, that's the reason it did not work for me. I will double the tape and see!.

Yep, that’s definitely why. You may have to triple though that looks like 1 inch and even 2 inch tape isn’t wide enough.

I have the same situation, I have like 4 inches left in front and back with the truck in. I'm still going to try this out, maybe it will work.

Been impressed with FSD. The only this is, I haven't found how to do front end parking with it. ?

Brilliant idea. Did your truck see the tape lines you placed when you drove close to them and show you a P to select as a parking space?

it doesn’t do that at this time. Looks like that might be coming in the Thanksgiving update though.
