I have been working on a solution for rear/side view camera to use when I remove my mirrors. One thing I just came to realize is how good the OEM Tesla cameras do in low light. They even manage to show color in low light. In this image you can see the Tesla rear camera (right), vs my camera (left and flipped horizontally). My camera is clearly not optimized for low light, I just didn't expect this big of a difference.

Does anyone know where I can get a camera that has similar performance to the OEM in low light?

Tesla cameras can practically see in the dark!

You will want a high-quality camera with a bigger aperture lens designed for low light.

you're going to remove your mirrors and replace them with cameras? huh? I thought there were enough cameras on the truck already. all you have to do is remove the mirrors, right? where would you mount the additional cameras and how do you get them to display on the screen?

You can see in the picture I added a display behind the steering wheel (no it doesnt block my view of the road). The cameras will be placed so they can see, behind, both sides AND the bed at all times. Basically 180° behind the cabin. I will share more details when it is done, but for now, I am seeking the best camera(s) for the job.

Wait, that second screen is permanent! it's not just for demo? wow, how many attention focus points do you have? it might not block the road from your eyes, but it does block it from your mind(attention). the more distractions and focal points in different locations you add. so, to do the chances of making a mistake go up. I don't think it's legal if it is. It shouldn't be!

That's a pretty hot take you have there.

You realize 99% of cars on the road have an instrument panel, basically every single non-Tesla? It would be a stretch to imply I am adding more focal points than a human can handle. A lot also have video displays of the camera in that area. I am not inventing anything here. I am taking a feature available on many vehicles, and putting it in my truck.

Its perfectly safe, in fact I would go so far as to say its MORE safe than Tesla default configuration. It will have more visibility, and I can keep my eyes closer to the same direction the truck is moving.

Here it on example on a KIA

yeah but he's adding a huge screen that looks bigger than the stock screen. I'm just speaking from my experience we don't want to distract the driver's attention any more than necessary. I am cheering for the FSD side. but honestly to me it feels like today FSD requires you pay attention even more than without it. for city streets . If you only drive clear open highways than maybe you can afford to be a little more distracted. So, anything that will increase the distraction of the driver I would say is not a good idea now.

I may be wrong about this, but I guess it depends on how much more if any this mod will distract you. If you're only using it when you would normally be using the mirrors. without fussing around with it while in operation than it might be okay because your distracted when looking in the mirrors anyway. except mirrors always work for the most part. and they force you to turn your head slightly in the direction to that you're looking to go so the distraction level is much lower with mirrors. keep us updated and be careful all the time.
Story time
When I was in high school way back early 90's one of my good friends Lost his mother when she was having trouble with a flat tire on the shoulder of the highway offramp. A distracted semitruck driver came by and ran over her. This was a devastating loss for him he was out of school for a while stricken with grief. very sad situation. that's why I tell everyone who drives on these roads. If you're having car troubles and you can still, make it off the road even if you have to ride on a bare rim get the hell off the side of the road avoid stopping anywhere along a busy road if you can. and if you can't stay in your car until help arrives or you leave the car there. don't risk your life fixing your car on the side of a road it is very dangerous.
