Are you talking about something that goes from outside the vault and slides under the existing roof?

That will introduce whole other sets of problems. It’s a really bad idea to inject anything into the cabin from the vault area or outside. If you open this up on a rainy day, you are very likely to have rain in the cabin.
The vault sliding cover storage slot would not be open into the cabin area.
The slot would have a waterproof cover so nothing dripping from the sliding vault cover could enter the cabin.

If I had to choose between a mid-gate pass through and the rolling tonneau, I'd choose the gate.

But the whole point of the tonneau is that 95% of the time the truck is parked, and the bed will be empty and covered. And every time you have to take a short ride to pick something up or back empty, you'll get better range.

And as everyone is fond of pointing out, range is king.

Well with the rigid sliding vault cover we're talking about you'd get the cover for storage, plus it would be easy to embed solar in the cover, and it would be just as good if not better for range than the vault cover. It would also stay on the truck when open.

....
I’m really hoping Tesla makes the cabin easily convertible into a sleeping area so I can just sleep inside and not deal with a mid-gate.
If there is no mid-gate you will have to go outside to enter/exit the vault sleeping area.

There are many weather situations, security situations (even bears) or privacy situations where you want access between cabin and vault and you definitely do NOT want to go outside.

This is the other reason the sliding vault cover is better, because it is completely out of the way of a possible midgate and saves the space the vault cover would be rolled up in for storage.

Rolling tonneau or just a tonneau? Because the former is handy, but I can just deal with leaving the cover at home sometimes.

-Crissa
Rolling, taking off a section tonneau was annoying to me. Either I am lazy or… I’m lazy about it.
Edit
I will also begin wondering about automating the ramp after the 12th time deploying.

I still have to update the CT CAD model to the latest version in the video, but it would look something like this from the top. The left piece of vault cover glass slides up the outside of the rear roof up to the apex. The sliding cover would be about 30mm thick and wouldn't alter much airflow when fully open as it would sit flush on the rear roof. You can have both in solar, or just the vault cover, that way the rear roof is still transparent if you have the cover closed. (Obviously this frees up the vault cover roll space for storage and gets rid of all the cover induced complications of a midgate)

(Note I still have to extend the rear roof lip a bit to reduce the sliding vault cover overlap, and I've also tapered the top of the cover so it fits the apex width. - but you get the idea)

Really hope we haven't created a "flying submarine tank" franken requirements beast that pleases no one - personally if it ruins core functionality I can do without mid-gate, solar, tailgate ramp, sail storage...as I've never had them in the 5 trucks I've owned...but I have had a usable truck bed and truck...I'd like all of them, but then again too much can lead to compromises....to me the vault cover and mid gate are most at odds and prob have the most risk / compromise potential with each other....personally really don't care about the mid gate as I don't want to sleep in a stainless coffin or really see any other use for it...given how many people on here want it you would have thought the chevy avalanche was the best selling truck in history! :)

Big difference
The Chevy Avalanche was not an EV so you would have to run an exhaust spewing & noisy ICE engine.

Yes, exactly my point. Midgate for camping in truck would be less useful in an ICE truck.

Just like dog mode is much more useful and safer with an EV while doing it in ICE vehicle is more dangerous & noisy.
