3-D printing?

I know some people are "printing" different parts and accessories or their cars.
I am thinking about getting into it, but I don't even know enough to ask the right questions.

My definition of experience, it is something you get ten minutes after you needed it.

Recommendations?
What will the initial $$ investment be?
Do I need a 3-D scanner?
What software?
Learning curve?

What else?

Cheers!
Do you really want to own a 3D printer or do you just want a few custom parts?

Download Fusion 360 (free for hobbyists), design your parts, generate an STL file, then ship if off to Shapeways (or similar) and let them print it on the big machines. Tons of material options, yes even Stainless Steel.

Resin printers are also fun. More upkeep and washing needed. Fun watching your print rise out of a pool of resin.
