Brighton Park, Atlantic City, NJ (Atlantic Ocean) β†’ Tesla Diner, Santa Monica, CA (Pacific Ocean) β€’ ~3,000 miles β€’ Tesla FSD v14.2.2.3

The Background

A few weeks ago, I drove my Cybertruck from Utah to Delaware on 100% FSD for a family emergency β€” my uncle was terminally ill and we needed to get there fast. 2,187 miles, 9 states, 44 hours. FSD drove the entire way with only 1 disengagement at a toll booth and 0.1 miles of manual parking at the cemetery for the funeral. We made it with 8 minutes to spare.

Full write-up from that trip: First Fully Autonomous Cybertruck Cross-Country Drive

That trip proved FSD could handle anything β€” mountains, plains, ice, night driving, city traffic, construction zones. So now we're going for the real thing.

The Attempt: True Coast to Coast

Atlantic Ocean β†’ Pacific Ocean. ~3,000 miles. 100% FSD. Fully autonomous.

We departed Brighton Park in Atlantic City, NJ on Feb 18 and are currently on Day 4, pushing west through Iowa toward Nebraska.

All 3 disengagements happened at a single Supercharger lot in New Springfield, OH β€” FSD got confused by one-way roads and charger positioning in the service plaza at night. On the actual road? Zero. Not one.

We even stopped at the venue where my wife Nichell and I got married 6.5 years ago β€” Lauxmont Farms in PA. FSD drove us there flawlessly.

πŸ”§ Notable FSD Observations So Far

  • Icy Iowa roads β€” 22 mph sustained winds, 45+ mph gusts. FSD handled it without a flinch while 15+ cars were spotted slid off the road.
  • 30-point turn in a tight icy alley β€” Needed laundry detergent at 9 PM in below-freezing temps. FSD navigated a tight alley, did a 30-point turn, and got us back. Zero disengagements.
  • Energy in headwinds β€” Consumption spiked to 724-762 Wh/mi across Iowa/Indiana plains. Brutal headwinds.
  • Pedal Assist at chargers β€” Needed at almost every Supercharger to back up far enough for the cable to reach. Not a disengagement, but a consistent observation.
  • Appalachian tunnels β€” I-76 tunnels handled perfectly.
  • Demo rides β€” Gave FSD rides to restaurant staff in Ohio. They were blown away.

FSD is oddly confused by superchargers. It doesn’t back far enough, and in one case it entered a defunct stall (that was clearly identified as such on-screen before arrival).

The good news is that the V4 chargers have much longer cables. I had enough room to open the tailgate, and yet the cable could still reach!

So was this getting pulled over by the cops and having to steer the first significant highway disengagement?

Also what kind of voodoo magic or hat/sunglasses combination are you using to be able to sit ON YOUR PHONE for hours like that. It beeps at you every now and then but man I am jealous of the screentime.
Of those 40 hours of driving it has got to be like 99.998% FSD and 97.8999% using your phone :)

(Zero judgement by the way, if these trucks are going to drive themselves to pick up my kid from soccer practice without me later this year they had better be at the point I can watch a movie on my phone now, just impressed with the lack of nag and high usage time your getting.)

I am curious, what FSD setting were you on? I recently went from eastern NC to Arizona and quite frankly FSD was maddening. In HURRY, it would consistently go 17, sometimes even 23 miles over the speed limit. In STANDARD, it would only go 5 miles over. I have pictures of the same road, no traffic, 55 MPH speed limit. Hurry was running at 78 and Standard at 60. 18 MPH is just too much of a disparity.

I controlled the Hurry speed (at times) by rolling into Standard briefly so it would brake, but in heavy traffic, I am sure it looked as if I was brake-checking the person or Semi behind me. But to have to constantly pay attention to the speed (since Standard was not keeping up with traffic), FSD seems useless.

The other maddening thing was constantly swerving to avoid skidmarks in the road while running directly over a large pothole.

So, I look like I am drunk swerving, an a*hole brake-checking, and driving wrecklessly.

I assume you were in Chill or at most Standard.

LOVE the wrap!

Yea, the inability to refine speed seems really dumb, especially with the scroll wheel.
It makes FSD unusable in some areas where going 5mp over results in getting rear ended and going 23 over results in a ticket.

Yeah that was the only on-road disengagement. I tried to let it stop on its own, even gave indicator, also changed profiles, but ultimately had to manually disengage to stop.

haha yeah I’m really trying to see if we can be actually productive in these trips. I love your point of view regarding the trust with family.

Here’s what I’ve found.

in v14.2.2.3 it gives me more leeway when I’m not wearing any kind of sun glasses, glasses, or a hat obstructing cabin camera view.

I have it setup where nav is on the right, pure vision on the left.

Then I have the rearview camera move to the left side on the PureVision side. What that does for me is this:

When the system notices that I need to pay attention, it wants to show the alert that says, please pay attention to the road. But visually for me, what happens β€” and this is a lot easier to see in my peripheral if I’m looking at my phone β€” is that it moves the rearview camera over to the nav side.

When it does that, that is a really clear visual for me in my peripheral that I need to look up πŸ‘€

So when the rearview camera moves, I look up. It is satisfied that I have looked at the road once every 15 seconds or so, with whatever parameters it’s following at that given time. Then it moves the rearview camera back to the PureVision display side, and I can continue using my phone.

Using this method β€” looking up a few times a minute, while obviously keeping my peripherals engaged and giving it a clear view of my eyes so it can track them β€” is allowing me to basically utilize my phone to work on business ideas, messages, comments, and do productive work throughout.

That’s been the case over the 50+ hours we’ve traveled so far and almost 4,000 miles β€” from Utah to Delaware, then Atlantic City to Colorado right now, and hopefully all the way to LA πŸš—

Thanks! My editor/designer created the wrap graphic and had it installed by Utah Protective Films for the base PPF then Vivid Graphics & Tint for the reflective accent vinyl wrap.

For speed:
~70% Hurry (Mostly sticks to 5-10 over)
~20% Standard (When hurry goes way over speed limit)
10% chill or sloth (for slipper icy areas)

Amazing write up. And that wrap is sick. Is it custom?

Thank you all for following along.

So far the problem areas have been:

1. Every Super charger except for the new longer cord V3/V4 style have required Pedal Assist with FSD engaged to back up far enough.
2. Parking lot and close promissory navigation is not good. If you stopped at a charging stall and want to move, it’s quite difficult to do with FSD.
3. Speed profiles need refinement but have improved since earlier v14 versions. I’m running v14.2.2.3
