The problem actually occurs when you come home. When you arrive in a RHD car country you are very much aware that something is wrong and are therefore completlely alert. Simply replace "left" in your mind with "center" and "right" with "outside" and you should have no trouble. The problem is that if you are over there long enough that you begin to adapt when you come home you will not be alert, everything seems normal, and blithely turn left out of a bar parking lot on a divided access road or scream "Omigod that idiot is in the wrong lane". I've done both of those. Jet lag was a factor in both cases, alcohol a factor in the first and altitude a factor in the second.
