FYI this is an option. There is a check-box for "tilt mirrors" when reversing.

Today on the highway I saw a Toyota Tacoma with a rack on top of the bed rails, and a tent on the bed. No rear-view camera, only side mirrors to see behind. Yes, limited visibility, like others have posted here about other ICE trucks.

Rivian R1T has a roof-mounted camera, which is a very nice feature. But knowing you have limited rear visibility, as others have suggested, use a spotter or your side rear-view mirrors. Mistakes happen, don't beat yourself up about it.
Wow I'll check the menu for this option. Thank you for this.

You can toggle off the setting for your mirrors to tilt downwards during reverse if you find yourself reversing a lot with your tailgate down.

Look man, a lot of people here are trying to help you understand that it's absolutely your responsibility to operate the vehicle safely, and it sounds like you are as well versed in the features and operating procedures yet. We all want to be more careful here, so it's a lesson learned.
I agree I take full responsibility for my actions. I've driven Teslas For many years and am accostomed to superior visibility and warnings to possible dangerous situations. I wrongfully assumed the truck provided the same or better in all configurations.

it would be real helpful and clever if the mirrors automatically reacted to the tailgate down and stayed up while in reverse and/or the tonneau lowered as well to provide the necessary visibility. All the hardware is present just a code update would be required.

That would be an excellent feature suggestion! You can submit a bug report right from the truck, or you can use the app to find Service > Ask a question.

If the Ai prompt doesn't get you pointed in the right direction, it will eventually pop up a dialog box that says something like "I need additional assistance". It will then give you a phone number to connect with customer support.

Since this is safety related, they will definitely take your feedback and relay it to other higher level teams.
