There is a very simple reason.

Tesla wants to sell 250k per year for the next 10 years.

That doesn’t happen with a $79k truck. All this chatter about $80k trucks makes sense as an interesting strategy when production is low and they are making 500/ week. Once production tops 5,000/ Week, it all falls apart.
Tesla wants to sell a MINIMUM of 250k Cybertrucks per year for the next 10 years but hopes to sell many more than 250k (maybe 350K-500K) Cybertrucks per year :)

The tide is turning

Maybe Musk is inquiring about advertising!
Two factors that have nothing to do with the product attract me to buying a Tesla. One, of course, is the ease of their hassle-free buying procedure.

The other relates to Tesla's lack of advertising. With other brands, If you find how much they spend on promotion annually, and divide the number of vehicles sold per year, you find yourself paying an extra number of HUNDREDS of dollars. After all, it's those who succumb to the promotion who pay for it. If Tesla starts spending on ads, it would cut my enthusiasm in half.

For those who just want a non gas-guzzling EV pickup truck, the Ford Lightning fills that need pretty well. But we don't see those people flocking to buy it. Why not?
For those who want an EV Hummer, there is literally an EV Hummer. People are not flocking to buy it. Why not?

I think the author is partially right. Tesla owners want a TESLA truck and/or a full sized SUV. They want it so bad they are willing to talk themselves into liking the bizarre design. My personal opinion is that Tesla owners have equated a lot of the pluses of electric vehicles with the Tesla brand. So they discount what other manufacturers can do in regards to building EVs and only want a Tesla.

Then there is also the Tesla charging network. People haul their toys on the weekends with their trucks. So they need the fast chargers to feel good about buying an EV truck.

All about the charging network for me. While I will mostly be charging at work, (for free!) having access to a great super charging and fast charging network is key. This being my second EV, the first was a crappy Ford Focus with 80 miles of range anxiety galore!!!

I delayed my order for a few weeks (Dec 20, 2019) because I was not really digging the design. This moved me to around 400k in line! It grew on me and now I find is a huge positive. The durability and minimalist lines are really attractive to me now.

Are they? Because you can't find one without a markup near me.

There are several reasons why those 2 aren't selling like hot cakes. #1 the Cybertruck. It's a way better vehicle, that was "promoted" at a much better price. Also there's a reason Rivians are selling better. They're a better vehicle. People want the future. Those 2 are the past, with a bit of future sprinkled on top, at ridiculous prices (especially the Hummer).

F150L has pretty much same specs as CT. In what way is CT "a way better vehicle"?

Check your numbers on the Rivian. All up, Ford has delivered about the same total number of BEVS as Rivian this year so far. Not sure how the model mixes compare.

Rivian deliveries 3rd quarter 2023:

Irvine, California, October 2, 2023: Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) today announced production totals for the quarter ending September 30, 2023. The company produced 16,304 vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois and delivered 15,564 vehicles during the same period.

Ford Lightning:

Ford F-150 Lightning sales decreased in the United States during Q3 2023.

Ford F-150 Lightning Sales - Q3 2023 - United States
In the United States, Ford F-150 Lightning deliveries totaled 3,503 units in Q3 2023, a decrease of about 46 percent compared to 6,464 units sold in Q3 2022.
As I mentioned, difficult to compare apples to apples.
Rivian numbers include SUVs and Vans. You omitted Ford E-Transit and Mach-E BEVs
Ford F150L numbers for year over year are up, not down. Q3 had the Strike.

Watch how many of these buttheads that were nothing but shade throwers all of a sudden change their tone when it becomes the best selling truck.

I edited it to show trucks to trucks. Personally I think the Ford dealers are part of the problem with the Lightning. They would prefer to sell ICE trucks and are probably giving customers reasons to buy them over the Lightnings.

I think its pricing and putting too much of a premium on the "ER" battery configuration - forcing people to only be able to get the ER battery in the higher trim models.
