There is a very simple reason.

Tesla wants to sell 250k per year for the next 10 years.

That doesn’t happen with a $79k truck. All this chatter about $80k trucks makes sense as an interesting strategy when production is low and they are making 500/ week. Once production tops 5,000/ Week, it all falls apart.

Maybe Musk is inquiring about advertising!

Two factors that have nothing to do with the product attract me to buying a Tesla. One, of course, is the ease of their hassle-free buying procedure.

The other relates to Tesla's lack of advertising. With other brands, If you find how much they spend on promotion annually, and divide the number of vehicles sold per year, you find yourself paying an extra number of HUNDREDS of dollars. After all, it's those who succumb to the promotion who pay for it. If Tesla starts spending on ads, it would cut my enthusiasm in half.

For those who want an EV Hummer, there is literally an EV Hummer. People are not flocking to buy it. Why not?

I think the author is partially right. Tesla owners want a TESLA truck and/or a full sized SUV. They want it so bad they are willing to talk themselves into liking the bizarre design. My personal opinion is that Tesla owners have equated a lot of the pluses of electric vehicles with the Tesla brand. So they discount what other manufacturers can do in regards to building EVs and only want a Tesla.

Then there is also the Tesla charging network. People haul their toys on the weekends with their trucks. So they need the fast chargers to feel good about buying an EV truck.

All about the charging network for me. While I will mostly be charging at work, (for free!) having access to a great super charging and fast charging network is key. This being my second EV, the first was a crappy Ford Focus with 80 miles of range anxiety galore!!!

I delayed my order for a few weeks (Dec 20, 2019) because I was not really digging the design. This moved me to around 400k in line! It grew on me and now I find is a huge positive. The durability and minimalist lines are really attractive to me now.

There are several reasons why those 2 aren't selling like hot cakes. #1 the Cybertruck. It's a way better vehicle, that was "promoted" at a much better price. Also there's a reason Rivians are selling better. They're a better vehicle. People want the future. Those 2 are the past, with a bit of future sprinkled on top, at ridiculous prices (especially the Hummer).

Check your numbers on the Rivian. All up, Ford has delivered about the same total number of BEVS as Rivian this year so far. Not sure how the model mixes compare.

In terms of segment share, the R1T accounted for 65 percent share, up 26 percentage points. Ford F-150 Lightning sales swept up 28 percent share, down 19 percentage points, while the Hummer EV Pickup earned seven percent share, up three percentage points. Finally, the Silverado EV remained flat at zero percent share.


Overall, the full-size mainstream electric pickup segment expanded 12 percent, selling 12,595 units last quarter. Comparatively, Ford F-150 Lightning sales underperformed the segment average.

I edited it to show trucks to trucks. Personally I think the Ford dealers are part of the problem with the Lightning. They would prefer to sell ICE trucks and are probably giving customers reasons to buy them over the Lightnings.

I think its pricing and putting too much of a premium on the "ER" battery configuration - forcing people to only be able to get the ER battery in the higher trim models.
