I only hear in the news that the new Model Y (and some older models too) have the installed cabin occupancy radar. I just wanted to make people aware that the CT also has this radar sensor! I saw it in the service manual AND confirmed it with one of the engineers at the Santana Row (CA) Model Y reveal (hosted by Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley CA). I’m not sure if it’s actually active now or will be turned on in some future update? I appreciate things like this about Tesla.

Tesla did say the activation of the cabin radar will come to the Cybertruck.

As for what it does, it allows Tesla to do things like: determine if there’s a child or pet left in the vehicle, determine the shape and size of occupants so that seat belts are tensioned appropriately in the case of an accident. Those were the main ones I remember Tesla publicly saying.

Franz even said it can detect heartbeats. Theres a lot they can do with the data they collect from their vehicles. What they choose to do with it will likely be something that generates revenue for the company, either directly or indirectly.

I like to think is more safety based than for generating revenue! -just my opinion ?

Ah, that's right. I forgot about that.

Think they (Franz and Lars) talked about this on the Jay Leno's Garage - new Model Y video.

True, but making Tesla vehicles safer saves money, because Tesla is expanding their insurance and will likely be insuring most autonomously driven vehicles. They know that directly or indirectly, the manufacturer pays for every death/injury that happens from their vehicles.

Even if another insurance company pays, that raises insurance rates and makes their vehicles less affordable. Tesla always looks at the BIG picture, not next quarter's sales and profits. Being able to properly tune airbag deployment for every situation makes the airbags more effective and safer. People get injured by airbags that deploy too quickly for the situation, it can be a very violent event.

I bet the radar will also increase functionality for robotaxi too. If a customer leaves an item in the vehicle, it can alert the customer before it drives away.

More data = more functionality.

Tesla is going to watch my heartbeat when I sit in the backseat with my girlfriend? They just don't make cars like they used to.
