I am a bit leery if this will turn out to be a big deal. With import tariffs (and who knows what new retaliation tariffs will come after Jan 20) this will be an expensive vehicle. Yes lots of Chinese wealth but what’s the volume of $200K cars in China? Bentley sold 2880 cars in China in 2023.
China has more billionaires & millionaires than US population-meanwhile, more & more people are living Paycheck2Paycheck in the States. Cybertruck gonna be a great & unique product to show off.

A good comparison might be the Model X and Model S, which cost roughly the same as a non-Foundation Cybertruck in the US. The Model 3 and Model Y are made locally in China, but the Model X and Model S have to be imported from the US, as the Cybertruck would be.

For 2023, sales of the S/X combined in China have been estimated at 7,021 vehicles. For comparison, 2023 sales of the 3/Y combined in China were 603,664 vehicles.

So the S/X combined are a bit more than 1% of current Tesla sales in China, with sales below 10,000 per year. The CT would probably be comparable.

Interestingly, it seems to have a different brakelight layout. Is that for a Chinese law, or another reason? Also, the Model 3 paint color is more reminiscent of the shinier old Model S paint, rather than the current American Model 3 more matte paint (there are differences between the factory image, and a real Model 3 image, but the real American Model 3 image still looks different than the Chinese one) (however, it is completely possible I am extremely overthinking this, and it is just a lighting difference).

Historically, China has not been a good market for consumer pickups.
Historically, China has not been a good market for consumer vehicles of any kind. Now it's the largest vehicle market in the world.

Things change quickly in China. 3-4 years ago, on this very forum, I predicted Cybertruck would be a good seller in China. A lot of people doubted that, based on historical pickup sales. But China has changed dramatically, with the middle class having more wealth than ever before. Families live further apart, people have more money (even in rural areas) and trucks for small farms and family businesses are increasingly necessary.

Cybertruck will sell so well in China that Tesla will probably have to install a Cybertruck production line at their Shanghai Gigafactory.

Pickup trucks are about 2.5% of cars sold in China (about 42,000/month). In the US, that number is over 20% (about 250,000/month). Meanwhile, the best selling pickup in China costs $17,000.

Maybe in ten years there is a big pickup market in China, but it's hard to say whether there will ever be a big demand for luxury pickups as there is here.

The Cybertruck will expand the size of the pickup market in China greatly. Obviously, this isn't going to happen overnight.

Actually fake news. The start and end day is same day. The application is already canceled.

Here is what happens: Some rich and powerful people have imported CTs and want to legalize them for the road in China. So they find connections to register the CT in the legal vehicle catalog. Then they register the CT at same day and apply for a license plate. Then Just revoke it when they're done.

If it's big hit there, they could easliy build a CT factory there in a year like Giga Shanghai.
