Only took 6 months to get into a fender bending accident with my Cybertruck.

The driver hit my rear bumper and took off?!?! Don't they know there are cameras everywhere on the truck? It was impressive sitting with the Highway Patrol reviewing the accident video live and him citing the driver with a hit and run and giving me her insurance information on the spot.

Thought it was only cosmetic damage, but she also hit right on the tow hitch...requiring it to be replaced as well.

Kudos to Tesla cameras making a bad situation much easier to fix...

I originally liked the idea of living in a state where no license plate is required in the front, but I got rear-ended twice already with my other car. This is an issue because I can't prove it without it without the license plate. Lucky you, you had that!

Hey sorry that happened to you. Can you tell us more about the tow hitch replacement and what broke? Sounds crazy that it broke.

If they hadn’t had a front license plate, would the cameras still have captured it (i.e. front camera captured rear plate as they were taking off)? I thought they are only active in sentry mode and after you hit the horn. Do they also record each drive and then just write over it if you don’t save it? I’ve only ever reviewed Sentry footage.

Make sure dashcam is set to auto, not off, then it will record every drive. It will save a 10 minute video anytime you use the horn, tap the dashcam app while driving, or it detects an accident.

I haven’t been able to definitively figure out how long videos are kept. Sometimes there’s videos from months ago and sometimes the one from yesterday is missing. After about 18K miles with my first Tesla, the USB filled up and I had to wipe it.

There are plenty of people living under a rock who still don't know what Tesla is (or SpaceX/Starlink), never mind the specific product features like cameras.

Maybe "broke" isn't the right word. Some of the bolts were compromised due to the contact and Tesla decided to replace the assembly...probably being overly cautious.

It was definitely easier due to Texas requiring a front plate, however, in my situation the dashcam took video before and after the accident. It captured the driver driving past me...and we would have seen the license plate then.

The police officer said since it was hit/run, he was authorized to give me her insurance company. Her company was Progressive, and they were fantastic. Even though I was not their customer, they were prompt and conducted the repair themselves without involving my insurance company (USAA).
