Scholarly papers (some accessed through the intrernet, of course), textbooks, journals, 50 years experience as an electrical engineer, experiment, analysis, simulation, hands on experience with Tesla vehicles, design of solar systems....

How do you know how to tell if a someone you just met is an engineer?
Wait 30 seconds and they will tell you.

As a professional some of my worst experiences have been trying to serve engineers because they disregard my training and experience because I’m... well not an engineer. So I will admit I have negative bias. ?

Anyway, the internet is THE source for info now. But discernment is key.

You asked where I got my information. I told you. You drew this conclusion. Not I. Anyone intelligent enough to understand the underlying principles no matter how he obtained that understanding is quaified to "talk about stuff". It is usually clear from a poster's writing whether he is qualified or not. A person intelligent enough to be qualified is intelligent enough to be able to sift the perhaps 5% of internet information that is not worthless.

If you knew anything about engineers you would know that engineers do not do that. At least no engineer, out of the hundreds I have met has ever done that. Maybe we have some spoor that other engineers can detect.

Well I must say that in my 40+ years of experience in the few cases where the company hired a "suit" to try to manage an engineering project it turned out to be a disaster. Most engineering firms (e.g. Tesla) have engineers as founders and in the upper levels of management so it doesn't happen very often but it does. Of course there are plenty of cases where management puts another engineer in charge and it turns out to be a disaster.

Common sense tells you that someone who doesn't understand music can't lead a symphony orchestra. Why would we think that someone who doesn't understand engineering (or at least the underlying relevant science) could lead engineers? I am sure it was as frustrating for you as it was for them.


Anyway, the internet is THE source for info now. But discernment is key.
If you said that in an interview at any company I have ever worked for you would be out the door quicker than boiled asparagus.

Twice lately you have dismissed info solely because it came from the internet. That was all you.

The rest of what you say really just proves my point. If it does t come from an engineer it can’t be trusted, right? My background was as an HVAC technician. I had many engineers call me to make repairs on their HVAC system but then dismissed my diagnosis because I couldn’t prove it to them to their satisfaction. The dismissal always came after the line “I’m an engineer...” That fact that I had made the same diagnosis/repair a hundred times before wasn’t good enough. Okey dokey, enjoy being hot/cold!

Whatever. Apparently we agree that discernment of info found on the web is what counts.

Back to the topic at hand. Doug is absolutely entertainment. He gives car a "Doug Score", which he explains as an subjective rating of how much he likes the car. That should tell you everything. But Doug also has years of industry experience, so I wouldn’t toss out all of what he says. That would make us unabashed Tesla fanboys.

There are good engineers and good technicians and bad engineers and bad technicians. A good engineer can spot a good tech in a few minutes. I have had the privilege of working with some very good technicians and communication has been just fine. Now that's been in my field.

My background was as an HVAC technician. I had many engineers call me to make repairs on their HVAC system but then dismissed my diagnosis because I couldn’t prove it to them to their satisfaction.
When it comes to HVAC technicians, good ones seem to be very rare. It got to the point that I finally took HFC certification and started doing all my HVAC work myself. Why pay some company to screw up my gear into a worse state than it was in when I called them? I have saved thousands of dollars after having bought all those neat gauge sets, vacuum pumps etc. HVAC systems are really remarkable things that require some fairly deep knowledge of physical chemistry to fully understand.

I finally did find a company run by a very good technician who, among his other skills, knows how to recruit good technicians. I trust him and his guys to work on my stuff if it fails when I am away (which it always seems to). As all good technicians do he knows when it is time to call in an engineer and does so (he gets free consulting - I get good breaks on service calls).

Doug is absolutely entertainment.
That was really my point at the outset of this subthread.
