Found the fastrak fits perfectly next to the visor and a 3d print file that goes well with it. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5516660

Just make sure to use some heat resistant material or the sun will make it droop like what happened to mine.

Saw this and wanted to give you a heads up. The MetroExpress Toll Road account covers all of LA and OC Fastrack Tolls. One transponder for all of So Cal basically. I cancelled Fastrak and got that. Quick hack!

I am in the Bay Area, and tried like 4 different positions, Fastrak still isn't being recognized :-(

Just got a brand new transponder bc I have been getting charged full price for when I am on 2 and 3. I can hear a beep when I switch, but no longer when it goes under the toll sign (it did with my Y). Hoping this new transponder works better, but found this thread bc I am curious about best placement. Anybody usually successful with FasTrak?

I hold mine up to the glass roof--not the windshield, the rear piece of glass--and it gets recognized in the LA/OC lanes. The new OC 405 lanes don't make it beep though but I am almost 100% sure it does recognize passenger count. Not sure why the no beep thing

A bunch of the OC lanes are on the honor system for passenger count or use legacy IR sensors.

My badge doesn't even beep! Fancy. I only got it because motorcycle == 3 in the new 'fastrak only lanes' that you can't use without one.

Lol, I hate to have to break this to you but they have had little tiny sticker about 1/4 inch wide by 1.5 inch long for a few years now that’s also mostly transparent. You place it anywhere on the inside windshield over you head and you’ll never see it. I have them on my X and S.
Hate to break this to you as well, but not every area actually has these stickers that you are referring to nor are they useful enough in all areas even if they were available. In the SF Bay area of California, for instance, there are lanes that require a box transponder so you can flip a switch to tell the sensors if you are:

—driving alone in the car (1 passenger, full charge to use lane)

—1 passenger (2 people in the vehicle, reduced charge for using lane)

—2 or more passengers (3+ people in vehicle, free to use lane)

you can’t get that functionality with the little sticker of which you speak so said sticker would be useless to many in my area.

FWIW

Cheers

PS—I see someone beat me to posting photos of one above so hopefully between all these posts it is clear why the sticker won’t do.

problem is that many teslas have glass that doesn’t let the transponder signal out.

wish they had an externally mounted tag you could connect to with bluetooth to tell it how many passengers you have since so many vehicles come with glass that blocks the signal these days…

I tried that as well. In fact, before the adhesive wore off the old transponder I had it just above my head on the top glass, same results.

405 gives me shivers just thinking about lol

That’s so weird. My transponders are the old square kind with the 213 toggle which I got maybe 10 or 15 years ago from Metro Expresslanes and they still work. for my model S, I recall that they switched windshield composition and transponders would work in certain locations for certain years, but not others. I have found that orientation matters. I hold it up to the rear glass as if it were Velcroed there, with the text facing such that if I look up, I can read it normally

what location are you in again? Northern California or southern? I have had a different experience in Northern California

I am in the Bay Area. I am gonna see how this new one does. I actually just stuck it in the center part (behind) the visor. I previously had the old transponder parallel to the manual shifter, on the left side, on the top glass above my head. It seems very intermittent tbh.

I haven't had the fortune of taking my CT up to the Bay Area, but in my X I thought the 580 had some black magic fuckery going on--exactly every other "gate" would make my selectable transponder beep. and the 101 gates usually didn't make it beep except on one or two of them. Have you noticed the same?

It's so funny you say that, I swear 237 used to beep and now it doesn't. But i can confirm the new transponder is not beeping on any toll gate, not sure if new ones even beep tbh. I'll wait until statement updates and let you know how it goes.

I told them I have been charged full price all of Oct (~$35), they credited me $19.
