Fsd did not tolerate the snow and ice build up on the b pillar cameras and fender cameras past night. Did fine when going straight, refused to make turns and gave take over immediately errors. The area immediately around the b pillar cameras was clear but in front of and below it was solid ice stuck to the glass, and i did not want to chip at it and break the glass accidentally. For now, i can just drive rhe truck.

as with any driver assistant or autopilot in aviation, the system has limitations. For example, aviation autopilots will not let you bank more than 45-60 degrees without disengaging or Auto leveling. That is the reality of the system.

though the goal is to “solve autonomous driving” Tesla has not done this yet. Who knows how they will over come these issues or any of the other system limitations but thats their intent. Im sure they will try different things and see what works. Of course, at our expense. Some things will fail miserably- like the gigantic uniwiper…. And will be replaced but the fact is, you bought it for what it is today, and theres a possibility they get it right and you dont have to buy again tomorrow… but the reality is (as people with HW3 know too wel) technology changes. Its like mining bitcoin- at first you didnt need much compute to solve the first few blocks- but as time goes on, the amount of compute you need expands massively. That is a simple reality.

The wiper does a good job cleaning the winshield directly in front of the driver. What it cannot do is clean the area in front of the camera. These are the things 85% of drivers will not experience, but in heavy winter storms and especially slushy driving, FSD has no chance.

Designed in California. Tested in ideal conditions (light to moderate rain)

I am not sure what magical cameras you are using, 4 of the 6 cameras on my truck are completely blocked within minutes of winter driving. I keep lense wipes in my truck to clean the salt off of the front side cameras, sometimes it is so thick after a drive I need to use two wipes per camera.
Not magic cameras but maybe magic chemicals 😉 Maybe that’s the difference. We use mag chloride… not salt. Mag chloride decreases when it gets wet again. Salt continually builds up.

Dude… in heavy winter storms even ICE trucks have a hard time with the windshield with humans driving them. The bottom line is FSD in heavy snow isn’t going to work, even if Tesla puts heaters all over the vehicle. As stated before, these vehicles were designed and tested in California… not the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, or the City of Chicago.

Went skiing today, because there was 20" of fresh snow! First big powder day here in the East in what seems like years. Anyhow, my experience is that the rear cam gets blocked quickly in bad weather. The side cams get blocked soon after.

Having said that, the only essential FSD cam is the forward cam in the windshield. The rear cam does not disable FSD if it's blocked. Blocked sidecams will trigger a red steering wheel alert, when turning, but FSD still works. Just toggle FSD off/on to clear the red steering wheel alert.

Today, I drove home on FSD and there was about an inch of cold snow stuck to the rear tailgate!

FSD still worked. The above image is after I dug the snow off to see how deep it was, when I got home! I thought the snow covered the cam with an inch of hard snow!

I can't wait for retrofit washer cams. The side ones are essential. The rear one is a little less essential, but for the CT you can't see out the rear unless your tonneau is open. I usually just tip my head over to look in my side mirror to see if anyone is behind me.
