Has anyone come up with a solution to mitigate wheel damage from stock covers?

Im planning a road trip and would like to maximize efficiency, but i also dont want to damage the wheels Tesla replaced by just putting the stock wheel covers back on.

currently i just have center “hub caps” in place. I have the “core” wheels, not the cyber wheel with the two part cover.

i know some have put gaffer’s tape or felt on the contact points, but has anyone found any other solutions?

i think the problem is hard plastic/metal clips are sharp, there is “wiggle room” and by the sheer fact that wheels move, there are friction points that scratch/rub/scuff the paint on the wheels with normal use.

Id be willing to put some kind of protective layer between the wheel covers and the metal spokes but the last thing i want is for one of the covers to fall off while driving because it wasn't held in place.

realistically, i know the efficiency boost is probably modest at best but still.

I've not put mine back on, but I was going to use electrical tape on the rim where it contacts the covers. I don't think it's the plastic scratching the rims, I think it's abrasive dust picked up from the environment that builds up and slowly sands the finish off the rim.

Agree and if you are in a snowy place with salt, it's salt dust, which technically is a rock, that grinds down the paint.

I took off the covers in my ‘24 within 100 miles of ownership and got rated range. IMO, the efficiency boost isn’t worth the potential damage; keep them off.

For my ‘26, I asked Tesla not to install them. So the covers are still new and wrapped in factory plastic.

Same for me when I took delivery of my beast I told the service center to just put them in the back of the truck. They didn't even unwrap them and they have been sitting in my garage that way ever since. I have not seen any significant range drop but I don't micro manage my range either for what that is worth. I actually got better range without the OEM wheel covers. I had them on for about 10k miles and off for about 10k miles, and the improvement with them off was about 5 wh/mi. I think it's because they were loose enough to rattle around and catch air and/or create some sort of drag.
