And Tesla has a lot of music options.
Unless you are driving in a remote area with limited or no cellular coverage. Which seems like a reasonable scenario for an "off-road capable" truck.

The advantage to satellite radio is that it works everywhere. Streaming doesn't. The fact that Tesla doesn't offer a satellite radio option for the CT suggests that they don't really expect it to be driven in the boondocks.

There is probably a way to buy a satellite radio and antenna from SiriusXM, and then install that hardware in a CT. Not as elegant as a factory-installed radio, but probably another way to get SiriusXM service.

The SiriusXM app for the 3/Y/CT will operate over the cellular connection like a streaming service. They do not have an actual XM antenna for "satellite" radio. Only the S and X have the actual satellite antenna...for now.

I had all the portable XM (pre-Sirius merger) devices back in the day. I was a early adopter, sad fact is the initial XM service was delayed due to 9/11. It had been planned to come alive 9/12/2001. I had to wait 3 months for my area to get service. XM was the superior product at that time. Having music uninterrupted felt so futuristic at the time. I gave equipment and subscriptions out for gifts all the time. Then, as these things go, mergers happen, channels get deleted, record companies impose huge fees, quality declines. I cancelled them all, and SXM is a terrible company to try to cancel subs for, it was maddening. Never again. And I don't miss it (well I miss the Fine Tuning channel, and the audiobook/radio drama channels)

Now I have Apple Music curation and Tesla integration. And if I want satellite coverage I'll just get a Starlink mini in the near future.

Funny that SpaceX just launched SXM-9 this week though. I do feel like SXM is a dead man walking.

SiriusXM is actually holding up pretty well, despite the rise of streaming alternatives. True, their subscriptions peaked in 2019, but they have only fallen by about 5% since then; it’s nothing like the collapse of cable TV. They still have two big advantages for in-vehicle audio.

First, satellite radio works everywhere, even outside of cellular range. The long-term threat here is satellite internet, like Starlink. However, it will likely be many years before satellite internet receivers and antennas are as common in vehicles as satellite radio hardware. And at least for now, the cost for satellite internet is significantly higher.

Second, SiriusXM streams live sports, not just music. Sure, anyone can stream recorded music, but getting the legal rights to air the 49ers or Dodgers game is much harder. SiriusXM is now a one-stop shop for sports audio – every pro game and every major college game is available everywhere, with no blackouts, no checking to see which network the game is on, and no need to pay multiple subscriptions. Not everyone wants to listen to live sports in the car, but it's a huge factor for some.

In the long run, the biggest threat to SiriusXM – and to radio and music services generally – might be self-driving cars. You have to keep your eyes on the road while driving, so radio is pretty much the only entertainment option. If the car was truly self-driving, you could read or watch movies or play video games instead, like you can do in an airplane.

The Siriusxm home page currently has a banner:
SiriusXM now available on your Tesla

SiriusXM now available in Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck with the 2024 Tesla holiday update. Start your free 1-month trial today.
SiriusXM was already available on the Model S and Model X, because they have built-in satellite radio receivers. In the other models, it's now available through streaming.

Get a Starlink mini dish and it is no longer an issue.

Tesla just isn't doing SiriusXM satellite anymore. You want it, you stream it.
