That was my first reaction…. Just the screen protector. My iphone screen looked like that for awhile with a broken protector. Was too lazy to fix it. I don’t have anything on my CT screen.

Suggest putting a piece of clear tape on the chipped area to minimize falling glass pieces when swapping that screen protector.

Yeah, looks like a screen protector to me too, but maybe I'm missing something. Cheaper protectors crack/fracture extremely easily. Anyway, this is the Tesla price, assuming they have stock.

Just ordered a new screen protector, it will be here tuesday and then i will remove the old one. If it is the screen protector, I got lucky. If it is the screen, I have a new screen protector for when i get the new screen...most likely when the old one stops working or is unreadable, or even when fingers start bleeding from the cracked glass...

nope, but I cleaned the windshield behind the plastic covering the cameras and I have a gopro(like) camera mounted where the rearview mirrow used to be. One of the pieces was on the console and while fiddling with the plastics I knocked a piece of the mount onto the floor...but I didn't think it hit the screen but I can only guess it did.

I also saw the $2200 price tag...guess I will be looking at that chip for a LOOOOOONG time.

AND, the worst part is there is a screen protector on the screen but it is 1/16th of an inch high, if it was even with the bottom of the screen it probably would not have broke. argh.

*This may sound crazy, but I would consider presenting a claim to your insurance for COLLISION DAMAGE from some object to your vehicle. I don't know your deductible, but it is likely less than $2000; and I don't know if your policy has some exclusion I'm unaware of. While all states are a little different, they are all generally the same. Check with age to see how it may affect rates. (32 years in Insurance claims industry including coverage litigation)

I'd call my auto carrier

If you dropped something on your car’s display screen and cracked it, whether car insurance covers it depends on your policy and how the insurer classifies the incident:
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This might cover it if they consider it accidental damage from an external object. Dropping something (like a phone or a tool) could potentially qualify as an "unforeseen event," but it’s a gray area. Insurers often limit comprehensive claims to things like weather, theft, or vandalism, so they might argue this doesn’t count. You’d need to convince them it’s not just clumsiness or wear-and-tear related.
  • Collision Coverage: This wouldn’t apply here—no crash happened, just a drop.
  • Standard Exclusions: Most policies exclude damage from “personal negligence” or “mechanical/electronic failure.” If they see it as you accidentally breaking it yourself, they could deny the claim. Wear-and-tear exclusions might also come into play if the screen was already fragile.
  • Special Add-Ons: If you have an add-on for interior or electronic equipment coverage, you might be in luck—some explicitly cover dashboard tech like screens, even for accidents like this. Check your policy docs for terms like “interior protection” or “electronics endorsement.”
Realistically, unless you’ve got a beefy comprehensive policy or a specific rider, they’re likely to say it’s on you. Repair costs for a car display screen can range from $200 to $1,000+ depending on the make/model, so if your deductible is high (say, $500), filing a claim might not even make sense.
Want me to search for typical insurer stances on this kind of thing or look up repair costs for a specific car? Just let me know what you’re driving or if you’ve got your policy handy!

I removed the cracked one just to check and put it back on till I install the new one at a better time. A little warmer and more humid to keep the dust to a minimum.

I was thinking this the whole time reading this thread.
"This guy just needs to take off the damn broken screen protector. Why hasn't he taken it off yet?"

Then I see this post.

Good to see its not your actual screen. I have a screen protector on the front and back screens. My iphone just go bashed to hell and thought my phone was toast and just peeled the protector off and it doesn't have a scratch.

I wanted the new one before I took the old one off to check it incase it was the actual screen...want to leave it protected.

This is my cue to post my usual rant that cheap screen protectors (made with sodalime glass) are inherently fragile and prone to fracturing with very little impact due to the way they're manufactured (they're ground-down to achieve the required profile (thickness) which causes thousands of micro-fractures). They might do the job of protecting the screen below, but often they fracture with a very minor impact that wouldn't have been an issue for the factory screen. Higher quality protectors are made from aluminosilicate glass (the same stuff used on virtually every mobile phone) and are poured to the required thickness, so are inherently MUCH tougher.

Gratuitous plug for our protectors, but we've been making Tesla screen protectors for over a decade and I truly believe they're the best you can buy, use code STRONGER for 22% off the CT screen protectors and screen cleaners.
