if you're just looking for something reliable, I've been through more usbkey type drives than I care to remember, all failed for some reason, probably the heat? There were maybe six or seven including decent brands like Samsung, Kingston etc.
That all changed for me when I switched from "thumb drive" type devices and went for a 240G SSD and a USB-SATA connector cable. That was rock solid and never needed reformatting or other work. Maybe heat dissipation works better with a larger case form factor? Who knows.
Then I replaced that with the Pi Zero noted above which maintains itself every evening while its syncing to my home storage over wifi
