I am pretty anti big government.
But sometimes the police force, FAA regulations, etc are a good thing.
FSD falls in that realm as it is used on public roadways and if it is good it improves the lives and safety of those using it, and those on the road who are driving next to people using it.
Sensible regulations are obviously a good thing, but just because they come from the government doesn’t mean they’ll automatically be smart or effective. They need input from people who have examined the situation more closely than government bureaucrats have.

Checks and balances make the world a better place, but their impact depends on the choices made by both governments and private companies. From what I’ve seen, the DOT seems to get this and is taking industry guidance to take thoughtful steps to speed up the safe introduction of autonomous driving.

The reality is that industry often leads government more than the other way around. A smart company’s long-term profit goals usually align with public safety. Launching a technology that raises death or injury rates isn’t the most profitable move, and Tesla is far from being a company willing to sacrifice its long-term profits and reputation for short-term gains.

They are working with government to help them develop sensible regulations to speed the roll-out of safe autonomous driving. Of course you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. So it remains to be seen how sensible the regulations end up (because there are plenty of threatened interests also providing the government with guidance). Regulators have to smart enough to see through BS.

Many of you may disagree, but Tesla's interests are less likely to be aligned with you than the government's interests. Tesla simply wants to maximize profits, the government is interested in public safety. That is not to say that both cant align or that they are always successful in their goals. I welcome more oversight.

Ideally I would love to see some federal guidelines on self driving behavior.
  • An external indicator light when FSD is active
  • Crash liability guidelines
  • Public standardized reporting on the effectiveness/crashes of the systems
why do we need to let other drivers know we are on FSD? They don't let us know when they are drunk, high, looking at their phone, yelling at their kid, etc.

The idea is people would understand the behavior the vehicle is not the driver. They would be more likely to drive around or not honk. Also other vehicles with AIs could use the light to identify and caravan with each other. That could be safer and more efficient

To me, this is the equivalent of “Student Driver” bumper stickers or decals. You are advertising that you are not yet capable of experienced driving maneuvers and will likely be extra cautious (aka slower than Grandma in her mercury marauder) and most drivers will begrudgingly yield to your lack of awareness or avoid you altogether by passing you at the earliest convenience

I think long term that would be a negative, other drives might treat FSD vehicles differently leading to poor model training over the millions of iterations.

I think drivers might be more tempted to cut off a FSD vehicle knowing it will break, yield to aggressive behavior, etc?

Unless cops see that light/identifier and absolutely ignore my vehicle I'm not going to run it. That seems like the only positive to me.

I agree, I don't want other drivers to react/behave differently if I'm driving or FSD is.

Difference for law enforcement would be an interesting angle, think early on it might lead to getting pulled over more, and then eventually less.
