For my use case, the Model 3 would not work. You are generalizing the trip in question.

I did not reserve the truck back in 2019 because it was the newest Tesla to be released. I reserved it because it is a truck. I have 3 large dogs, St Bernard/Huskies.

having a Truck that would get 500mi + would be more than enough to cover the 400mi trip with enough leeway.

There is no way you can tell me that the Cybertruck charged up to 100% going at 70-80mph won’t be any faster than the Model 3 with multiple stops at the same speed.
Actually, it's only moderately faster because of the starting range. Once on the road, the Model 3 will beat the Cybertruck because less electrons used per mile.

As of now, the CCS Adapter doesn't even work with the CT anyway.... Doesn't fit the new opening and doesn't work even with the fender off. Will Tesla make one specifically for the CT?? I sure hope so...but when??? CCS generally sucks compared to Tesla Network, but when it's your only choice it sure is nice!
The much bigger thing is waiting for Tesla to come out with the 350kW CCS adapter. That will allow the truck to go to 800V at those CCS stations that support it.

I started thinking about just getting the extender. I use the truck as a daily driver 100 miles per day. I can plug in at work and home so that's not an issue. The issue is, I take long trips about 5-6/yr that are usually 1000-1200 miles each way. I was looking at the charging for a model 3 and charging times/locations for a trip i normally take. It takes about an extra 4hrs of time vs a gas car. I LIKE stopping every 100-120 miles on a road trip... AND i'll be towing a low profile trailer that's not more than 2500lbs loaded (jetskis). So, I will have to stop every 100-120 miles anyway to charge. This is where I was thinking the extender could come in handy, but How useful would only 40 more miles be? and it would seriously only be useful on the very first leg of the trip or over-night.... The truck will only charge so fast so the extender will take even even more time now per stop, but less stops.. So when I break it down, the extender would cost me $670 for every hour I save charging on trips over a 5 year period... I'll gladly pay myself $670/hr to wait.... My math is based on it being useful at 1/3 of its capacity because of the trailer, and only the first leg of the trip each way. Doesn't seem worth it unless you are in a area where you can't get to a charger, or you want it just for peace of mind.... just my 2 cents...
The whole range extension discussion is making me realize how nice a long range CT version will be... But when?? I hope charging is profitable enough for Tesla to blanket convenience stores with superchargers eventually...

i honestly dont think they need to blanket convenience stores. I think maybe acouple, but a lot of people charge at home. Tesla should work on streamlining destination chargers for apartment complexes and condos

Does anyone know the Physical Specs of the Range Extender? Is it really going to occupy 1/3 of the bed, rendering the utility of the bed useless or does it drop into the under bed storage area?

We don't know exact details, but yes it takes about a third of the bed, up to the tracks in the renders. It has a bed-like surface on top, so we'll assume you can load things above to some extent. So it doesn't render the bed "useless", just reduced. Most people rarely use the full capacity of a truck bed. Even most guys I know that use their trucks for work often have a tool box or farm equipment pretty much permanently in that front part of the bed, which presumably could sit on top of the Range Extender in this case. Still leaves a 4-foot bed for loading things.

In my use case the RE won't affect me pretty much at all. A couple full size suitcases should fit above the RE but under the bed cover, leaving the rest of the bed for more stuff. Awesome road trip car.

No one knows the details at this point. I think that there have ben prototypes. Probably not going into the current under-bed storage, because that messes up the weight distribution.

Sure, it takes up some of the bed and reduces it to what has become relatively standard for so many trucks today.

Im curious to know if the range extender will finally allow me to go on road trips and not have to wait to charge. Due to the extra miles I can charge, go to the bathroom, walk the dogs and be done in a tight 10 min or less. With the X and Y we usually have to wait 15-25 min depending on the next charger.

The range extender will only be advantageous for trips between 250-350 miles or towing.

If you want to travel faster in the Model X or Model Y, make sure you come into the Supercharger at a very low level (~5%) and charge only to about 50-60%.

The Cybertruck is NOT going to make your travels faster, they will probably be longer because the truck uses more power and thus the battery is bigger.

Unfortunately, the Cyber Truck is a Truck and not a “Road trip car”. People like myself buy Trucks for for the full utility of the Truck Bed like carrying motorcycles on long trips into the backcountry, camping and overlanding. C’mon Elon?! You mean you couldn’t make the Range Extender drop into the under-bed storage out of site? I would even take a Range Extender of half the capacity,if it could drop into the underbed storage and still have the full utility of the Truck bed. Or even better, double the size of the range extender and make it thinner and the full length of the bed like my Decked storage in my Chevy Colorado!

What type of range does your Model X get when it is driving at 40 mph? Taking a trip into the backcountry has the advantage (from an EV perspective) that you probably aren't going to be doing 75 mph off-road. The range goes up dramatically. 400+ miles is probable. The original Model 3 has a demonstrated range of over 600 miles!

And I just have to ask why don't you ride the motorcycles the entire way?
Can't you add more fuel, add storage, make the ride more comfortable while making it a great off-road vehicle.
