A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of towing the UP Dark Helmet S Plaid racecar with our Cyberbeast on 24x9.5 UP Cybrhex wheels wrapped in Nitto Ridge Grapplers 315/45R24 with a total trailer weight of 9k pounds. Some people have asked what it was like, so here we go:

200 miles from Hawthorne, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA for X Takeover, 3 charges in between Hawthorne and San Luis Obispo (Westlake Village, Santa Barbara and Buellton), at 65 mph most of the time. I roughly saw just under 100 miles of range in between 85% and 15% battery between each charge and got as low as 9% in between Hawthorne and Westlake chargers, after about 40 miles of driving. The ride itself was amazing and well above my expectations, being on the 24's. The load didn't feel heavy other than under hard breaking, but that didn't happen more than twice in the whole trip due to time of day and low traffic. The highest energy usage seen was 1100 kw/h once I got to Buellton.

Besides the fact it took about 8 hours (yes, 8 hours) with the longest charge time at the Westlake V2 charges was 1.5 hours since I took off from Hawthorne at only a 65% SOC (don't ask), I enjoyed the experience and would do it again given the opportunity. The rear steer in tight lots such as the Santa Barbara one and having to maneuver around the Westlake Village one for the charges came in CLUTCH and is a gamechanger when towing. The best charger was the one in Buellton given the later hours and long row of chargers allowing me to pull in and take up quite a few. Don't worry, no one else was there waiting for a charger and there were tons available, after 10pm.

Obviously most people aren't going to be towing this type of load with this specific wheel selection, but it was a great test to see what the truck was capable of and how it behaved.

The rear steer is killer when towing but you have to be careful it doesn't turn to sharp and hit the trailer on the bumper.

Here's a good solution for those towing cars to show and races:

Keeps the car clean and increases range. The UP flatbed with a Model S on it looks pretty aero, but I don't think it can match this. And there's something to be said for being able to wash the car before you depart.

Of course good things come at a high price!

We're open to taking donations. The trailer pictured was actually a rental, our company trailer was being used elsewhere and is lower and more aero, but still a flat trailer.

Only ran into an issue with that when the spare tire was mounted on the tongue of the trailer, but removed it once I realized that was hitting. No issue after that.
