Should I proceed with ordering FS CT, non-FS/regular AWD CT and wait, or roll the 1k deposit into a MY?

Hi all - I got the invite to configure the FS CT and got so excited that I went ahead and configured and paid the $1K order deposit. I got financing approval but the downpayment is a bit higher then I would like, so now im wondering if its worth waiting (who knows how long) for the non-FS CT aka regular AWD, proceeding with delivery (already assigned a VIN) for this FS CT I ordered, or even trying to roll the $1k deposit into a model Y (not sure if this is possible, I asked through the chat on the app but no response). My reasoning is as follows: I love the FS CT but it's obviously pricy, and I don't need any of the extra features except FSD which I don't NEED but would be nice to have. I currently have a model 3 and use FSD all the time but am also fine with regular autopilot. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind waiting for the non-FS regular AWD CT and save $27.5K, but I don't want to wait over 6 months and who knows when I'll have a chance to actually order the regular non-FS AWD CT. Alternatively, I'm even considering the model Y, and im not sure if they would let me roll the $1K deposit I paid towards a MY, and if so, its probably waiting for the Juniper release next year anyways. Looking to get peoples thoughts! Thanks.

My initial thought is give it up so that someone else that really wants one gets it.

Keep in mind never know what will happen to regular pricing. (Although tesla has history of large price drops). Also, tax credit may not be around either through policy change, higher CT pricing, or you make more money. If you can afford FS, realistically you should be making income at a level where you don't get the tax credit.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it. People have been able to put their FS on hold with their 1k deposit. As Beast said, I wouldn't count on the tax credit on the CT. It's possible it doesn't qualify or the tax credit doesn't exist.

When did you reserve CT? If you reserved it last year, then the wait is very long for non FS. There are so many folks who are waiting to buy non FS version. Unless you are a very early reservation holder, forget about CT for couple of years. Demand for CT is strong. Even with max production ramp up, 2023 reservation holders will have wait for at least 1-2 years to get non FS version.

Your deposit is 100% non-refundable. Tesla will not 'move' it to another vehicle. Your only option is to place your order on hold. Maybe try the smallest local credit unions and banks with few branches? Tesla uses big banks, who are not as 'loose' as small local banks and credit unions.

Same boat as you. I called and asked to put the reservation on hold. Max time is 6 months. The rep mentioned that by then they will be able to match me with non fs.

thanks guys - I reserved it 5.14.23, so it sounds like I would have to wait at least 1 year to get the non FS version? if I put the reservation on hold and they hold it for 6 months, I wonder what happens if the nonFS version is not available to me by then. I am leaning towards going with the FS version I already have assigned - curious what peoples thoughts are. thanks again.

I asked Tesla today the exact question but they also don’t know. Nobody knows how non FS orders will go through after six months. If they strictly go by Reservation number, which they should, then people ahead of you will have to order or pass on non FS before your turn. Even if 25% of those people decide to order, there will be 250,000 to 400,000 orders before reaching 2023 reservation holders. However if many people decide to not order or if Tesla sends out non FS order invite to everyone, then it’s a different story. You might be able to get it sooner. I know this sucks. I wish Tesla was more transparent on how they would roll out non FS. My reservation hold expires in two months, but I’m a very early reservation holder. I hope they honor the RN numbers and don’t spam everyone to order non FS, but I understand that I’m being very selfish when I say that ?. Cybertruck does that to people ?

This was Tesla rep’s response today. Nothing new than what we know. If you need the truck this year, their recommendation is to order FS. Nobody knows how long you have to wait for non FS. Specs might change. Price might change. It’s all up in the air! My wishful thinking is that specs stay the same and prices eventually go down.

What down payment were they requiring from you? I’ve been reading from some people that they were looking for as much as $80,000.

If it helps you make the choice, this isn't exactly the correct number. To qualify for the tax credit you would need the base AWD model. No one knows what features that lacks. It could be:
  1. Unknowns
    • Different Wheels/Tires
    • Different Interior colors
    • No accessories like floormats
  2. FSD
  3. Premium Connectivity
  4. $2500 voucher? Not sure if this will be given after FS
I agree that the $27k is a lot more, but the real number is considerability less than that. Personally I would wait unless you need the truck ASAP.

They initially asked for 35k from Tesla financing but I got approved through chase and that ones around 20k which is fine - now the issue is that it won’t let me upload my chase offer and only shows me the Tesla financing offer and I asked them to undo the Tesla financing offer so I can upload the chase offer on the app but they also are not responding to that message on the chat. I don’t want to wait 1-2 years to get the non-FS so leaning towards the FS CT, but i at least want to know my options for example if I decide to just switch the order to a model Y would I be able to apply the $1k deposit towards that purchase - again I asked all these questions on the app but no response from Tesla only “reply YES if you want to place your order on hold”

Weird that it won’t let you switch to a third party loan. Call them until you reach customer service or if that doesn’t work maybe drive down to your service center hopefully they can assist you.

That’s a good point - I went with the gray interior and the cyber wheels which I think are nice - the FSD doesn’t get factored into the tax credit so I can order that without loosing that credit (assuming it’s still available). the voucher is nice but everything is out of stock so not sure how useful it will be for a while
