Hi all,

I have been researching how to retrofit the smuggler locker into the base Cybertruck. A YouTube channel, CT59 with his truck and Tesla attempted to but did not work as Teala stated during install there was some missing bracket they did not know what it was or part number. They had ordered all of the parts associated with the locker from the Tesla parts store.

I think I might have figured it out but it would require someone to check the void space either by unbolting and raising the bed floor and look down into the void or crawl under the ear and look up.

Basically there is an aluminum bar that spans the width of the void space and that is what supports the tub weight and bolted onto. This bar is NOT part of the smuggler locker parts list but rather a piece that connects to the frame and bumper area and hence did not come up in the required parts list. So if someone looks into the void space and does not see this bar, then that may be the missing bracket Tesla talked about. I do have the part number of that bar and can post it when I am not using my phone. If it is there then it is something else….

I hope this research will get the locker into the base truck which mine is 2-3 months from delivery.

great work @bri75phx ! I would like to help you but I don't have my CT yet. I hope one of the engineering inclined problem solvers (or just brilliant CT owners :) ) on this great forum will get you the info you are looking for.

Here are some Images of the part I am talking about that appears to be missing in that X.com image posted above.

Tesla Cybertruck Smuggler locker retrofit install in Base Cybertruck lower-cross-bar-member

This part info is the following:

  • Service Manual Page: Lower Tub Crossmember (Remove and Install)
    • This page details the removal of the 2 bolts (typically 13mm socket, 20 Nm) that secure this crossmember to the vehicle frame.
    • It also references the 4 bolts (10mm socket, 8 Nm) that attach the bed cargo tub to the vehicle, which fasten through the bottom of the tub into this crossmember structure. [1, 2, 3]
  • Part Number: 1878860-00-D (or revision E/F)
    • Part Name: It is frequently listed in parts catalogs as the "Rear Lower Tub Crossmember Trim Panel" or "Rear Bumper Reinforcement" (though it functions as the structural crossbar you described).
    • Description: This is the aluminum bar that spans width-wise across the underbed void space. It serves as a mounting point for the bottom of the underbed storage tub (the "sub-trunk").
    • Availability: As you noted, this reinforcement bar is standard on Dual Motor (AWD) and Cyberbeast trims (often associated with the "Foundation Series" or premium interiors) but has been reported as missing or different on some base configurations, leaving the tub less supported or requiring different mounting hardware. [1, 2, 3]

So between what the X.com image shows and the service manual picture above, it seems to stand to reason that in addition to the complete parts list for the underbed storage system you need to include part #1878860-00-D (revision E/F) and associated bolts. I do not know if the bolt holes are in the frame itself or if Tesla removed them (which would be strange to make different frames for essentially the same truck and would cost more...so who knows.
