Tesla Cybertruck Tired of Rolling Coal? [solved] rolling-coal

After reading a post about being fed up with coal rollers, I thought I would share a few easy ways to report them. I've told many people about my local 'smoking vehicle hotline' at the Supercharger. The hotline gives folks a sense of relief to have a way to report this nonsense.

Before you get too excited the plate must be from Maine, Utah, New Jersey, Maryland, Colorado, Connecticut, or California (I have some tips for those of you outside of these states). Nearly 20% of the country lives in these states and you have good odds of bumping into one. Plus new states are passing legislation regularly, so keep your ear to the ground. Most states make it very easy to report, often it is a simple voicemail.

That said let's dive into how to report these plates:
  • California - Visit this link and you will find a report form. To complete the form make sure you have the date, location, and plate number.

  • Colorado - The acts of coal rolling or diesel modification are both illegal. To report either issue you can call this number (303) 962-3211. Have the plate number ready to report them via voicemail. They will verify the gas type and year. The coal roller then receives a 'smoking vehicle warning' and is required to repair the vehicle in 30 days or face continued fines.

  • Connecticut - Call DEEP's Emergency Response Unit 24 hours a day at 866-337-7745 or 860-424-3338. (Should these numbers be unavailable for any reason, call 860-424-3333.)

  • Maine - Call the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) by calling their 24-hour hotline at (800) 482-0777; this is the number to report any environmental violations including excessive emissions.

  • Maryland - Report a vehicle with excessive emissions, to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). Call the MDE at (866) MDE-GOTO

  • New Jersey - Call the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) hotline at (877) 927-6337, also known as WARN DEP. You can also use the WARN NJDEP app to report non-emergency environmental incidents.

  • Utah - Report vehicles "rolling coal" to the health department in the county where you saw the vehicle. You can do this online using this link or by calling the numbers below:
    • Cache County: (435) 792-6570
      Davis County: (801) 525-4975
      Utah County: (801) 851-7600
      Weber/Morgan Health Department: (801) 399-7140
      Salt Lake County: (385) 468-3837
NOTE: The plates must be from the states listed above, but if you see these plates coal rolling in your state, you are welcome to report them. Also if you do not live in one of the states above, the EPA would like to hear from you using this link.

It is good to see common sense is still common in some places!
