Just works. I think you have to hit the “Home” & “Y” or buttons to sync it with Tesla (while under the Bluetooth connection screen that is linked on the screen to connect a controller when you play a game).

I did a bit of a write-up here but basically Tesla changed the Bluetooth chip sometime in the middle of 2024 around the time for the Model 3 highland, and for the CyberTruck while the Model Y still had an interim compatible Bluetooth chip.

Xbox controllers are generally a hit or a miss (Model 1708 use to work well prior to the Bluetooth chip change but not well on the CT), so don't recommend them at all.

I'm currently using this $22 cheap controller which work well enough although the Y X B A labels can be a little confusing for guests since Tesla games maps to Xbox key layouts. Recently had a really fun bout of Boomerang FU with 3 controllers connected to the car (2 via Bluetooth, 1 via USB in the glove compartment).

If you already had two controller sets fail to connect, I’d stop messing with random off brand ones and just go with the “known working” options, because with kids you want plug and play not troubleshooting every weekend 😅. If you’re on Xbox or PC, the official Xbox Wireless controller is the safest bet (Bluetooth + wireless adapter support), and for Switch the official Pro Controller or 8BitDo is usually super reliable. On PlayStation, DualSense is the obvious one and it connects fast. The cheap Prime Day packs often have weird pairing issues, bad firmware, or they only work properly on certain systems, so it’s not you. Honestly it’s the same idea as choosing platforms that reduce setup friction, like online casino geen registratie explains why “no account” options are popular because people want to jump in instantly without registration or tech headaches (it’s a review guide, not the casino itself). Same mindset for controllers: get the one that just works with one button press. If you tell me which console they’re using, I can name the exact best model to buy.
From my experience I would not recommend Xbox controllers anymore, especially for Cybertruck and newer Model 3. After the Bluetooth change they are very inconsistent. I am using a cheap generic Bluetooth controller and it connects reliably. The button labels are a bit confusing since Tesla maps everything to Xbox layout, but functionally it works fine

PS5 controllers just got an update so that you can quick connect to up to 4 devices, assigning each system (PS5, CT, Second PS5, ...) to a shape button, then using that to turn it on, i.e. press and hold triangle turns on the PS5, square connects to the CT...

By the way, if you're looking for other ways to have fun and, well, relax a bit after these technical adventures, I recommend checking out betonred casino. If you enjoy testing devices and games, you can try your luck on this platform too. Incidentally, the casino experience is just as engaging and exciting as racing for the perfect controller, and all without any extra setup.
Exactly, Bluetooth and controller compatibility issues can be quite annoying, especially with the changes in new models. I also noticed that after Tesla's 2024 updates, many older controllers started to perform erratically, and some stopped connecting altogether.

I agree that cheap controllers with questionable specifications should be avoided initially—they usually lead to unnecessary time spent troubleshooting connection issues. But it's funny that you still managed to create real gaming chaos with three controllers at once!

As you rightly said, with children, it's especially important that everything works the first time without any unnecessary configuration. I think it's better to choose something proven, like an Xbox Wireless Controller, if possible. As for PlayStation, the DualSense really does always connect quickly and without any issues.
