With a commercial air craft US rules anyways you are required to have 2 people in the cockpit at all times, one of which is required to be able to take control at any time. When one of the flight crew has to use the restroom a qualified steward/stewardess steps in.

Automotive autopilot is far more complicated than aircraft auto pilot.

Radar can easily sense distance and relative velocity. The time it takes for a pulse to come back gives distance the frequency shift gives relative speed.

The problem I have with the Tesla vision is the forward cameras are too close together, you should have 2 cameras of the same resolution and field of view separated but with overlapping fields of view to give the best ability to judge distance.

Commercial Aircraft autopilots use electronic packages about as big as 3 large suitcases. Mostly redundancies but they do have transponders navigation components and weather radar that all help the auto pilot. This is not as complex and as interactive as what you need to function in the road environment with pedestrians and so many more decisions for traffic, controls like lights, stop signed merging into traffic and such. It is a completely different animal.

To walk away from the helm is to violate the safety rules for it, though. Criminal negligence.

How do you pilot a sail boat solo then without breaking the rules?

Have you been on a boat before and seen how much space is on the ocean?

Solo sailors also sleep and who's even there to enforce it in international waters? Besides, autopilot on a boat is really just a simple heading lock on the ship rudder. Nothing fancy at all.

And most of the time you can see better from other places than the helm, especially on sailboats. And your not going very fast to boot.

It is definitely not illegal to leave the helm in the appropriate circumstances. That started to be debated here and then the mods went and deleted half a dozen posts. There's no law saying you can't do it, but you are still responsible for the vessel. There's just no preemptive law making it criminal.

Solo sailors also sleep
This isn't great. There HAVE been instances of solo sailors or even just everyone not having watch for hours and hitting something. Sure, there are probably millions of hours of autopilot without watch, to every collision.

It definitely is illegal to use autopilot and leave the helm.

It's not like a sail boat with a lashed tiller.

Definitely not federally (USCG) illegal to leave the helm with AP engaged. Stop making stuff up. If there are specific state lake laws, I can't know all of them. It's not illegal in CA or NV. Unless you hit something, THEN you were clearly doing something illegal, which is not operating safely.

There must be at least two people in the cockpit rule did not always exist. From what I learned from "Air Disasters", sadly there have been a few plane crashes where the pilot or co-pilot decided to commit suicide by locking the cockpit door when the other pilot went to the bathroom, then pointing the plane at a mountain/the ground/the ocean etc.. The two person rule was created because of that.

Similar to a rule at most ranges that rent guns. Not a law, but an operational rule for most, recommended by the industry. You can't rent a gun if you're alone and don't already own guns. Too many on-range suicides. When I've rented, I first have to show them my own operational handgun.

To participate in a Shooters World Firearm Experience you must have at least two people in your group or have your own personal firearm with you.
