Information from 3M about their wrap material. Might want to read before jumping off the wrap cliff.

Please pay special attention to the manufacturers recommendation of where NOT to apply their product. (stainless steel )

Also take a look at the recommended storage location of vehicle (inside ? ), car washes ( no no no ? ).

And the comically SHORT life span of the material.

Information like this is good to know before you commit yourself to a short lived cosmetic gift wrap.

And as often is said just before someone takes that next step: "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?"

Nope, we don't know what they are using. 3M is a leader in that market though. Here is the info sheet for the newer 2080 film, which has an 8 year warranty (on vertical surfaces) The latest updates on this film are updates this year.

My daughter's Tesla X has green matte wrap.

It's going 3 years now with jusr a few nicks.

I bet 3M is the best in class among them.

Regardless of what Tesla is using exactly, the general point still stands:

wraps are relatively temporary, prone to damage, and require special care to get whatever warranties lifespan is suggested

folks who think they want one should do their diligence before committing to caring for a wrap (or head’s up deciding to not care for it)

I haven't had to have my car painted in decades but it is possible to paint stainless steel after sanding the surface, using really good primer and definitely using a reputable painter. Would a full paint job cost $11K? A bunch more? It definitely would last longer than a wrap.

My 2009 silverado is 14 years old and I live in Canada and we get lots of snow in the winter and they use lots of salt on the roads. Even though I have a garage, for the last 4-5 years it has been outside year round. For the last 14 years, I get it rust proofed once per year and I wash and paste wax it every spring and fall. The finish looks almost new.

I have clear PPF on my Porsche from the dealer. I took it off the hood. I didn’t see that they had put it on the headlights and side mirrors. Now it is cracked, and it looks like the least expensive fix is to replace the headlights, front bumper, and rear view mirrors! I won’t ever use PPF again. I took off the hood when it was newer very easily. But the cracked stuff, not so much. If I ever wrap a car, I’ll have a date on the calendar to take it off. And it won’t be anywhere near the end of life of the product.

Painting SS is a very involved process. It requires acid etching the surface in addition to other primer coats just to TRY to get the paint to bond. It would be more expensive to try to apply paint to SS and then it's an expensive experiment and when the paint system fails you would end up up with a matte SS finish for life.
