Well written review by @Cyberlove yesterday (read it here). My perspective on the truck is a bit more nitpicky and, I admit, down to a lot of trivial details. Still I feel that these items factor in with overall ownership experience and I think a lot of this will be new info as well. I took notes and this will be in more of a list format, hopefully saves you all from reading a novel. I'm sure there's no need for me to talk about rail dust etc, or how the wheels don't fall off while driving etc or being a celebrity. Still, get ready for a long list, so here goes.
Exterior:
- frunk button super difficult to find since there are no reference points like a badge or grille
- door pull area is the same felt material extended out from the glass area (durability?)
- doors usually fully close on their own weight with a slight push
- some exterior trim clips are not holding, not yet resolved after service visits
- most stainless surfaces are flat/smooth except where it gets sort of wavy above the wheel wells
- rear passenger doors do not open to 90 degrees like all the initial videos claim
- the glass roof top has a mirror/reflective coating similar to a one-way mirror, can only see out
- rear right side tail light top trim is 1/4-inch taller than the tailgate, I even saw folks on sentry recording pointing it out (I believe the mounting bracket is welded to body panel)
Interior:
- sound system is on par with a $80k to $100k luxury vehicle
- front window controls are positioned under the wrist (although depends on seating position)
- rear passenger window controls are even further back, meaning you have to shrug up your shoulder to use it
- there are weird bumps at the far corners of the dash, near the glass, looked like the upholstery coming up, but seems to be by design
- storage space under the display, the gap between display and center console is about 6.5-inches, so bags need to slide in from sides
- cupholders are super grippy
- no 12V outlets?
- menus show frunk power on/off switch, no idea what that refers to
- the horn is difficult to press, and it's actually easier to pull it downward in order to honk
- the squircle 6 o' clock position has a metallic gray part, which is not metal, but plastic
- squircle is way better than yoke
- both front seat backs have pocket storage
- glass roof shade is awkward to install, comes with additional spare plastic clips, as they tend to get dislodged during install
- white decor leather is uneven, you can see this in a lot of photos/videos posted by others
- top couple inches of tinted windshield glass gets hot under the sun, like 20°F to 30°F hotter than other parts of glass, just inches below, mirrored roof gets pretty hot too, if I were to guess 150°F
Visibility:
- the A pillar blocks your view when traveling on a left curved road, lots of driver head swinging to see around it and check for pedestrians
- rear view mirror isn't useless because of the size, it's because the rear roof line is so low, that it limits your viewing distance to 300 ft
- can't see the face of someone standing behind the truck via rear view mirror
- rear camera view gives a really good big picture of what's behind you, but the view is so wide that it's often difficult to identify the make/model of the vehicle behind you on the freeway
- times when you can't use the rear camera: when the tailgate is down, when it's raining at night, when using the signal lights, when you activate the hazard lights it also turns off the camera view
- a lot of rain water gathers on the windshield sides, depending on the position of the wiper and direction of travel, you will see a lot of it flowing back into view
- when activating the wiper one-time, speeds above 40 mph, the wiper will stay at the bottom position for 30 seconds
Vault:
- tailgate has soft close mechanism
- the buttons for tonneau cover is similar to that on a camera shutter, slight press will move it for as long as it's held, pressed all the way down will auto open/close all the way
- tailgate release button doubles as light switch, only when tailgate is open
- rain leaks a bit forward of the tonneau cover because someone at the factory must have ran out of foam tape on their roll and simply started a new piece, rather than running one continuous strip
- D rings on floor and sides are difficult to pull out and it requires prying out with screwdriver or similar tool
- gaps on the floor sides and at tailgate means no hauling dirt/mulch or similar
- anti-slip bed liner works really well in wet conditions
Driving:
- steering is really sensitive and twitchy initially because there's no steering play on steer-by-wire
- truck is very maneuverable, short front end, easy to park and get around in tight spaces
- on screen park/drive selector is supposed to go away when driving, sometimes it doesn't
- fast, quiet ride
- squircle flat top makes a good hand rest
- steering wheel has some constant vibration when reaching 75 mph
- some dashboard and headliner rattles on rougher concrete highways
- limited regenerative braking I've seen for at least 8 miles of driving, seems random or weather dependent
- cruise control anticipates the next turn (using navigation) and applies regen braking
Other:
- very strong bondo (body filler) smell when kept parked in garage, probably bed liner
- release/push tabs on frunk air filter cover all broke off, very fragile
- random metal knocking/clanking sounds when parked after vehicle powers off
- considerably less fit and finish issues overall compared to Plaid S (2021)
- open tailgate and open tonneau voice commands opens the charge port
- open frunk voice command opens frunk
- when you pause the frunk closing from display, it doesn't allow you to select open until almost closed position
- rear suspension occasionally makes adjustment at red light, had to check if I got rear-ended
- Tesla USB drive failed at 106 GB storage (about 1 week in), would no longer record reliably
- display shows the actual physical condition of truck, such as tonneau cover position, windows, doors, signals, but no high beam animation
- I have seen sentry mode and vehicle standby consume anywhere between 25% to 50% of the battery use (i.e. in 3 days time, I drove 70 miles and sentry/standby also consumed 70 miles)
- mileage is about 400 Wh/mi, majority suburb driving
- had one time where the J1772 adapter stayed in the charge port when unplugging and the door automatically closed on it and got stuck, had to pry door back and plug charger back in to resolve
- app has shortcut buttons for lock/unlock and tailgate, but not one for frunk, need to go into controls menu
- wiper wiggles around at freeway speeds
- wiper menu overlaps music controls when active
- shout-out to Tesla employee riding a R6 coming up to me, checking how I liked the truck
Anyway, super appreciative to the engineers and folks at Tesla factory on bringing the Cybertruck to reality. Great truck, no regrets. It's a real accomplishment.
