Hello,
I placed an order for a base model CyberTruck (dual motor), which is $79.9k. Since https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax2023.shtml indicates that for an individual purchasing a CT, they can get the $7.5k tax rebate (unclear if at PoS or at tax time, but honestly I don't care as long as I can get it).

My Tesla rep has been very responsive over the app - but they told me today that "they have no official information about it, the only way I can get the rebate is if it is purchased for a company or through a lease".

Has anyone purchased a CT in 2025, and got the rebate / received the necessary IRS forms that Tesla has to provide at PoS indicating that you can get the tax credit (if you meet income requirements)? So far my rep has indicated it is not possible ... and I am extremely sad. I tried to wait a couple of weeks prior to ordering after the announcement on January 3 that it now is applicable for an individual sale.

(btw, Tesla did give me a 2024 VIN originally, but said I should be able to get a 2025 VIN instead - FuelEconomy.org indicated it has to be a 2025 model and Tesla has to register with the IRS at PoS for each Truck sold).

Wow .. I thought Tesla was on the cutting edge of Technology .. the IRS has updated their records, but Tesla doesn't know about it yet? :( Again, it doesn't have to be at PoS for me, Tax Time is fine, but paperwork is needed from Tesla at the time of purchase, which seems they can't do. Huge bummer...

The IRS only publishes what Tesls tells them to (why they did so early??? ?‍♂).
My guess is they are using up the remaining ineligible packs and then will update the web site to indicate newly manufactured AWDs are eligible.

A note; it took about a month to get the M3 tax credit eligible. At the time they said it was a paperwork issue. I haven't seen the same for the CT.

The M3 was the only one that had to wait and it was June when they got the M3 approved.
Your memory is better than mine. I wonder if that was due to the guidance on percentages being able to be grouped across vehicle families and/or factories.

In order to receive the Tax credit under 30D Tesla needs to upload any VINs to IRS (yes, each and every qualified VIN to IRS). VINs can be sold or unsold yet. The 30D credit can be then claimed at POS or via form 8936 *with your tax return of 2025*. My guess is that Tesla is not procedural ready to claim the credit at POS. It should be soon (assume IRA does not get repealed by congress.....)

That was the 2023 way.
2024 onwards, Tesla needs to submit VIN and buyer details at time of sale/delivery.

You can do both. If you want to wait and get it with your tax return filing at later time, it is totally fine. However, to get it at POS time, Tesla needs to be ready. Which I do not think they are - they probably have not uploaded all VINs to IRS yet.

FYI, FuelEconomy.org replied to my questions, will attach below ... they indicated that even if you do the tax credit for FY25 taxes, at the time of sale Tesla has to submit something ... since they cannot at the time, there is no way to get the tax credit currently for the CyberTruck for individuals.

FuelEconomy email:

The information that the IRS has provided us with is that at this time, only the 2025 Model Year Cybertruck is eligible for the tax credits and only if placed in service (the day you take delivery) during calendar year 2025, “January 1, 2025 and before January 1, 2026” as noted above the red banner at the top of the table in your screen capture below. If Tesla delivers a 2024 model year Cybertruck, it would not be eligible as we understand it.

As previously stated, all transactions for the tax credits must be processed through the IRS Energy Credits Online dealer portal. As the seller, Tesla must use this system for you to be eligible for the tax credits. It doesn’t matter if they are providing the tax credit as a point-of-sale benefit, or if you are planning to claim them for yourself when you file your taxes. It is our understanding that you cannot claim the tax credits if the seller does not provide you with and IRS time-of-sale report that states definitively that the transaction has been approved by the IRS.

We are not involved in this process and have no access to any of the IRS systems. The IRS is solely responsible for administering the tax credits and they have asked that we direct all questions to them:

Consumers are encouraged to contact: 1-800-829-1040
Dealers are encouraged to contact: [email protected]
These are the only contacts the IRS has provided us with.

Sincerely,

Fueleconomy.gov

That's not how it works anymore. Even if you defer taking the credit until tax time, the sale must be run through the portal when it happens.

Yes, Tesla is not ready. Maybe they have not started shipping the 25YR model. To get POS credit, the process is here: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/how-to-claim-a-clean-vehicle-tax-credit

TESLA, hurry up!
