Here in Arizona there is an interesting crease. Private sales are not taxed but dealership sales are. Dealership tax though is only on the difference between the trade in value and price of the car
So if someone sells you the car for trade-in value plus $100, they pay taxes on the entire value of the “new” car.
Yea here in FL they screw you coming and going. It's such a racket.

$61k for a 1300 mile FS AWD Cybertruck would have been a steal.
Yep there has been a few owners on the CT Market that were asking high-high $$$ to attempt to get most out of their investment.

Then for some reason they ended up taking big drop $$$ trading it in, loss to us and the seller!

It made me think of developing a new platform, where instead of getting raped for trade-in value your car to some faceless company that's just going to turn around and resell your asset for a ton of markup, you could sell it to a true fan for maybe 1-2% above what you were going to get on trade-in. Yeah, maybe you're not going to get what you think your car was worth, but at least it's going to someone who is going to actually love the vehicle.

I'm as pro-capitalism as they get. And I think this would be a fun response to those companies that know they can give you almost whatever they want for your trade-in, because most people don't have the time or energy to sell it on their own. How fun it would be to short-circuit that model.

I guess I'll just throw that one in the good idea basket. Ha ha.

I read a story about a guy who hangs out CarMax and tries to buy vehicles from private owners for a higher wholesale price than CarMax offered them. He then the flips the vehicles for a profit.

Used is the way to go, $65k-$75k used is the zone for both AWD or Foundation.

Any more or less look out for you.

Buying new is just throwing money away!
What kind of used deal did you get?

Mileage, condition, equipment, price?

Because if I'm only gonna save $10K, I'm just going to get one with new tires, no unknowns, no wear, and the 8 year powertrain warranty that hasn't already diminished.

To get me to buy a used truck that normally sells for $80K, even if it only has a couple thousand miles on it, I'm going to have to be saving at least $15K and have a lot of confidence the thing is cherry. That's why the old rule of thumb is that new cars lose 25% when you drive it off the lot. I don't want to have to spend a bunch of time searching and eliminating questionable offerings either. Time is money and you never know what the previous owner did to the truck.

I'm always shocked how much Cybertrucks sell for used. I mean, yeah, they are definitely worth it if there's nothing wrong with it (and you don't count the time you spend finding and making the deal), but a used truck has a bit of an unknown. If I can afford the new one without denting my financial situation, I'll take the certainty, as long as the price delta is not too great. Obviously, that's subjective depending upon how tight the buyer's personal finances are.

I've got some news for you. Tesla is a little different from a dealership when it comes to taking trade-ins because they really don't want your used Tesla. They view themselves as being in the business of selling new cars, the ones they manufacture, the only reason they are generally willing to buy your pre-owned car (of any marque) is because sometimes it helps facilitate the sale of the new vehicle. Often they wholesale the cars they buy for little to negative profit, because they get too many used ones as Tesla buyers upgrade to the latest and greatest. This is the actual truth - Tesla does not want to be in the used car business, it's just a necessary part of their manufacturing business.

So, feel free to sell your used Tesla to a used car lot or on the private market, Tesla prefers that.

Rape is non-consensual. Tesla will never rape you on the trade-in value. If you don't like their offer, sell it to someone else.

I’ve only done one Tesla trade-in, so this is based solely off that experience, but I thought it was a pretty fair offer. I traded in a ‘23 M3P for my Beast and they gave me $27K and transferred FSD, so essentially $35K. Not bad for something I paid $50K for and put 30K miles on. Plus all the gas savings due to moving from a V8 Tundra to that as my daily.

Oh, that was also after the “Highland” refresh came out, so I knew the offer wasn’t going to be the best on a previous edition car.

Yes, that free FSD transfer was a Tesla promotion. Without that Tesla's offer would not have been very strong. Which is typical, Tesla really doesn't have any desire to be in the used car business, they do it for people who won't buy a new one without being able to trade in their old one.

We traded in my wife's Model 3 last year for a refreshed Performance Model 3 and the trade-in offer was pretty low compared to what we could have sold it for locally (probably minus $5-$6K). We did it for the time savings and general convenience of not having to deal with used car buyers.

Call me spoiled brat if you will but we end up doing it every time. The way I see it, my time is worth money and I’m going to put at least 10-15hrs into selling a used car in the best of cases.
I’d much rather spend that time working another shift or shift and a half. More cost effective and I don’t have to deal with tire kickers, weirdos, dmv lines, used car salesmen or anything like that.
I also sometimes pay for valet parking and have a membership in a car wash place.
COULD I do those things myself, absolutely.

I have no idea what you're talking about - this was directed at the CarMax's and Carvana's and other dealerships of the world. I never suggested that Tesla should over any amount whatsoever for any product.

My observation is that any automotive interest that takes in vehicles on trade in routinely offer less than what one would typically expect to be charged on the private party market.

What precisely are you taking issue with?

Yea dude I think you're 100% right on this. I've been there and done it, trading in is the easy route even if I take a bit of a hair cut, when you net out the time I would have spent haggling I come out ahead. No argument there.
