CTOCers,

I have a curious question for those of you who have other Tesla FSD vehicles, besides the Cybertruck.

I have very excited about eventually getting ASS for the Cybertruck. I was wondering for those who already have summon on other Teslas, do you use it often? Have you used it in a shopping mall area in which your vehicle comes and picks up you and your shopping bags? How well does it work? I think this feature will be great especially on cold or rainy days.

I am just wondering if the concept actually meets reality?

Thanks!

I think it's a neat feature, but in its current state is a bit over-hyped to be honest.

The single largest use case is getting out of your truck, and having it park in a very tight space.

It was pouring rain the other night when we left a restaurant. My partner met me there after work with her X. She never uses ASS so I proudly took her phone and summoned her car. It turned on the lights and wipers and carefully backed out of the spot and turned to crank the wheel and go forward. And then it stopped due to the horrendous rain and wouldn’t budge. I finally had to sprint over and get it manually for her before then running to my Beast.

ASS isn't something practical. It's like light show, where you use it, in controlled environments, to impress people.

There have been a ton of other cars hit, curbs hit, etc. with ASS and it will just stop and then you have to run to your car because it's blocking the lane.

Fun party trick, but not useful until it is combined with the FSD stack, IMO.

I sometimes take my wife's juniper to work just to keep the safety score up. I always park at the far end of the lot just because I like the walk. Apparently where I park is out of the 250 foot range so it won't work to try and summon it.

One time I tried it at Buc-ees and it went straight towards a tow truck loading up a car. I let it stop when it didn't seem like it was going to on its own. Got about 5 feet away with no sign of slowing or turning to go around. Pretty nail-biting.

It'll be nice once you can just hit the button and forget and the range is increased to at least cover a mall or Costco parking lot.

Summon is kind of how i see crabwalk on Hummer EV...

Cool... but, will i ever really use it? I went in a Hummer EV ride recently and talked to the owner about it, he was super excited about it (at first), but never used it other than showing people like me.

Wow, thanks for sharing your stories everyone. It definitely doesn't seem to be able to used confidently for practical purposes.

Ive used ASS in model Y and its slightly more practical than a neat party trick. When it does successfully work, It takes about as long to come to you as it would to just walk to the car, and when it stops in the middle of the road and you ultimately have to go get it anyway, its a little embarrassing. Im sure it will get better…

i can see the utility of pulling the car out of a tight spot to get easier access to the doors, but again, then you're blocking the road.

dumb summon “come to me” is dangerous and i do not recommend using it. It took out someone’s tail light because it cut the turn coming out of a parking spot too early.

They aren't working on ASS anymore. I assume it will just be ditched for FSD when it's ready.

We’ve never used it on any of our Teslas and I would not use it on my CT until a new CT controller comes out and is thoroughly vetted. By that I mean that it can properly park, it can properly pull into any SC stall w/o additional work, and it never comes close to a median or other car. Call me paranoid but I have experienced all of these with the current controller.

In the model Y juniper it is limited to about 250 feet as other post has suggested. This makes it pretty limited. When it extends the range to every corner of the Costco parking lot, it will be useful. My dream is to someday summon my vehicle (which is parked at my home) as I'm taxing on the tarmac on my commercial flight at the airport that is about 30 minutes from my home. That's when smart-summon will be incredible.

I have used it successfully in my wife’s model S a handful of times. It’s especially useful in the rain. I have had it come pick me up to avoid getting soaked. I will admit it does hesitate a lot. But I believe it will continue to improve with FSD improvements

It has worked 2 of the 7 times I've tried it. Even in ideal conditions, 150' away, one turn and straight to me, mostly empty parking lot, on a sunny day, it just couldn't figure out which way to go and just stuttered to a stop just outside the parking space. I've given up on it.
