If Tesla follows through on the plans to discontinue the Model S and Model X, then in a few months, Rivian could have a larger EV lineup than Tesla.

Tesla: Model 3 (mid sedan), Model Y (mid SUV), Cybertruck (pickup). So three models.

Rivian: R1S (large SUV), R1T (pickup), R2 (mid SUV), EDV (delivery van). So four models.

Will be interesting if they can deliver on their version of FSD. $2,500 one time charge for a system that includes radar and lidar, and will be level 3 in 2027. From a pure driving standpoint, the vehicle will be fresh and certainly attract some buyers, but it seems like a Model Y is still very competitive. However, if for the cost of 2 years of FSD subscription you can have unsupervised driving for life, that is where Tesla needs to be nervous.

With that said, until it happens, it is no different than the promises we are getting on our side too.

I suspect that the Model Y will remain very competitive with the R2 from the driving standpoint -- except off-road. My guess is that the R2 will become the default choice for anyone who wants to take an electric SUV off-road (or who wants to look like someone who does).

And that might enough to ensure that the R2 finds a niche in the increasingly crowded mid-sized electric SUV market. In the large SUV category, the R1S easily outsells the Model X, and I think the off-road capability of the R1S has a lot to do with that. I would not recommend taking an MX on the Rubicon Trail.

That's an interesting choice of colors/designs. They're really trying to make it stand out. Reminds me of a few quirky Bronco Sports I've seen.

My bet is on Scout to take that place as long as they come to market soon.

Tesla needs to manufacture a light "off-road" AWD Model Y to help it compete.

Think larger fender flares, a slight suspension lift, 18" off-road oriented wheels and tires, front skid plate, etc.

If the pricing is right, the R2 could be competitive with ICE as well. Think Subaru Outback, only with 656 hp and 609 lb-ft of torque.

If you're going to offer a lot of Model Y trims in the US (and the count is now up to five), then adding a "light off-road" trim would seem like an obvious move. Aftermarket companies have already jumped on it:

Apparently the colors/designs are meant to be "inspired" by the Star Wars robot R2-D2. Because they are both "R2" or something. It may not be a factory option, but I'm sure that some buyer will want it on a wrap.

people always tend to compete EV against EV but Rivian is very lucky now that most of the OEM scrapped their EV adventure/misadventure. Tesla is very smart to rid off S & X-now, Tesla needs to offer smaller Cybertruck trim, the size of Ford Maverick, all hell loose! :p

The Model Y is not a mid suv, it’s a small crossover. The Model X doesn’t even meet SUV standards.

The Model X meets Tesla's SUV standards (which admittedly may not be the same as yours or mine). So does the Model Y. I just confirmed this point with the Tesla Assist AI:

It looks really nice! Is that really going to be 45k though? Seems like it will be more.

Not sure this is a Model Y competitor. Looks to me more like it will cannibalize the sales of the R1S.
