Are you able to put a mtb on the tailgate shield while having the crossbars on the tail end of the truck? Currently have this set up but need more area for bikes.

Unfortunately, having that crossbar on the tail end is going to negate the ability for you to put a MTB on a bike pad over the tailgate. Here’s a picture of the setup without the crossbar so you can see the spacing.

Can you show me a image and explain how your strapping those bikes down? I have found out that the pad doesn't come with straps. Can you help clarify how you keep them stable with the pad?

Pardon my ignorance but do the straps wrap around the bikes main frame? Can you provide an image by any chance? Im being told it doesnt come with straps and that just sounds redicuous i agree.

Mine came with two straps. I will say, getting the shield on is a PITA. It looks simple with the Velcro straps, but you basically have to loosen them completely, and when you finally get everything in place, those metal clips at the bottom scratch in the surface of the tailgate (and my wrap!) I’m kind of annoyed by it and wish I would have known how difficult it was to secure and how those metal clips sit right at the bottom, potentially (definitely) scratching the tailgate itself. Ironic that the thing that is supposed to protect it ends up being the thing that scratches it 😩

Copy that any image on how it's strapped to the frame to hold the bike in place?

Have you tried tightening the straps while the tailgate is closed from the inside? I don't have this problem

I actually don’t strap them down. The turning of the front tire, wedges the bike’s frame and fork over the pad and its is extremely stable and secure. I’ve driven 800 miles, over 10,000+ft mountain passes and the bikes don’t budge. With that being said, if you want some added piece of mind, you can use a bungee cord or even a ski strap, and use it to secure the bike to the loops on the pad. I’ll try and get a picture tomorrow.

To be fair, I don’t use any straps as when you put the front tire over the tailgate, it basically secures itself. We drive from Reno to the Bay Area frequently and over a mountain pass, and we’ve never had an issue. If you do want to be extra safe, a ski strap or simple short bungee would work great.

Nice Pivots!
Thanks! Wish I could take credit but I’m a roadie! Younger brother is a big MTB guy out of Prescott Valley, so he found some incredible deals on them for me. I’m loving them, as there’s apparently been a massive upgrade over the last 30 years! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
