The bed is about 6' and with tailgate and tonneau open it's just a few more inches from the back to the top of the rear glass: 8' up the air possible/legal here in SoCal?

My first thought would be to put a roof rack cross bar at the top most and bottom most positions. Have the ladder overhang the back and front a little and measure to the tallest point to make sure you don't hit going under and overpass. Or bias it to overhand on the tailgate side.

I transported some 16ft 2x4s with just the bed and the tailgate down. Strapped them up real good then put some orange stringers on the end for any other drivers around me.

If you don't have a ladder rack, this is the way. Just make sure whatever you flag the end of the ladder with complies with your state law.

There is always a way lol - but is it worth the risk of messing up your nice ct? . Use a trailer or find someone with a van or truck that has a cargo or lumber rack

I bought 2 roof racks and installed them on the higher 2 bolt locations. The racks from Tess Studio are not the same height. By placing the taller one in front, the slope of a long load will rest on the tailgate when closed.

I have the Hansshow roof rack, 4 pieces. back 3 are the same front is higher so they are level. I have transported 16' pipes with it with no problem. I used velcro tie downs but there are some better options out there now. the top of the crossbars are t-track so you can actually bolt down clamps or put in eye bolts and tie downs.

Thanks ALL! But this is a "one time transport" so I don't want to buy/rent anything. On Facebook Marketplace there's a 28' ladder for cheap I want but still trying to figure out how to get it home.

Oh, it's extendable?
Set it to 19 feet and strap the sections together.
Put it under the truck and strap it to the front recovery points and rear trailer safety chain spots.
Maybe, use at own risk

Messing up my nice Cybertruck?

I don't understand this way of thinking. Not only will a ladder in the bed not "mess up" my nice Cybertruck, I bought the truck to use it, to get stuff done. I'm not going to waste the time borrowing a van or truck, or hooking up a trailer, when I can simply secure a ladder in the bed and tie a safety flag on the end. All lumber yards and hardware stores have safety flags if you ask. This is what the Cybertruck is made to do!

You can beat the hell out of it for a decade and it will still be worth almost as much as a truck that did nothing more difficult than go to the opera. Trucks are meant to be used, not protected from normal wear and tear as if they are going to be your retirement someday. You can't retire on a 10-15 year old Cybertruck, it's just a tool you use along the way. Heck, I've been retired for years and I still use my truck to get stuff done, LOL!

What's wrong with securing it in the bed with the tailgate dropped and a red flag tied on the end?

That's how everyone I know transports ladders in a pickup without a roof-rack. Just be glad it's not a Rivian, that would pose a real problem!

You want to put it flat in the bed, you will have a level 8' surface and the ladder is only 14'. That's 6' of overhang. You will definitely need to flag the end of it to be legal. Don't do it at night or you will need a red light on the end.

Again, thanks ALL!

I should've "google" it first, feel so stupid now:

AI Overview

In California, cargo can generally extend up to 4 feet beyond the rear of a vehicle's bed or body without a special permit. If the load extends 4 feet or more, a solid red or fluorescent orange flag (at least 12 inches square) is required during the day, and red lights are required at night.
California DMV (.gov) +3
California Overhang Regulations
  • Rear Extension: Maximum 4 feet allowed before requiring specific flagging/lighting (CVC §24604).
  • Front Extension: Maximum 3 feet allowed.
  • Side Extension: Maximum 4 inches beyond the side of the vehicle.
  • Flagging Requirements: If the load extends 4 feet or more to the rear, a 12-inch red/orange flag must be placed at the extreme end of the load.
  • Night Driving: If driving during darkness (or when lights are required), 2 red lights visible from 500 feet must be used at the end of the load.
